(34,661 posts)When it comes to a White Mother with five Kids living day to day on Food Stamps and Housing Assistance, that is as real as it gets. But,ignorance only sees the Brown Mother with five Kids living under the same circumstances.
As someone who worked Part Time at a County Family Assistance Office for a year, seen the real side of Poverty and Family issues. Oh,and from time to time,we would get a Mommy Do Gooder,we all know the type, the holier than thou type, actually racists, pop in the door to scream at us for helping those grifters and drug Addicts. Most of my Intake Clients were Seniors who were in distress because of loss of Housing,or unable to afford Food or their Social Security was used up to pay for Medications instead of food or Rent or heat or Lights.
Yup,culture alright. My first experience was in the Midwest,Second time was here in the Desert Southwest. Poverty is poverty, just some areas try to hide it better than others.

(35,437 posts)All White suburban kids would sometimes venture into the mean, ugly cities. "Risky Business". "Adevntures in Babysitting", etc. No one wanted to live in the urban hellscapes known as cities.
Starting in the 90s, cities went through a rebirth. All of the sudden, the culture switched and living in the city was fun and glamorous. "Seinfeld". "Friends". "Sex and the City". A whole new generation left the suburbs in droves to experience life in the city. The internt boom accelerated these trends.
Now, those White suburbs and rural areas are being left behind because their cultures were off-putting to diversity. They demanded racial, gender, sexual orientation, and religious conformity. All of which are difficult when the big money economic sectors recruit talent from all corners of the globe with a lot of that talent being non-White, non-Christian, and non-conforming to gender roles and sexual orientation.
