President-elect Joe Biden is considering Cindy McCain to serve as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, according to a report from The Times of London.
McCain, the wife of the late Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, endorsed Biden's successful presidential campaign against President Donald Trump and was credited for helping the president-elect win the conservative-leaning Southwestern state this year.
"It's hers if she wants it," a source reportedly said to The Times of London. "She delivered Arizona. They know that."
McCain has been publicly critical of Trump's attacks on her late husband, which the president continued even after the longtime senator's death in August 2018.

(29,322 posts)Might as well give me an ambassador job since I voted for Biden in Arizona and no I don't vote based on who the McCain family tells me to vote for. I voted for Obama in 2008.
Tired of McCain getting credit for Arizona while progressives get the blame elsewhere.

(29,322 posts)If insulting McCain was such a big deal in this state then Hillary Clinton would have won the state in 2016.

(54,058 posts)Too bad I couldn't "deliver" Texas. Maybe I could have been under consideration as Ambassador to France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands or Spain. I speak Catalan and Russian, too, but I wouldn't want Moscow, and Catalunya isn't going to separate any time soon.
Actually Germany WAS once under preliminary consideration, but it never went past that due to unforeseen election results in 2016.

(6,814 posts)of the UK, both history and current culture, who could serve? This is the stuff that makes us lose faith in a government that doesnt respect knowledge and experience.

(28,703 posts)she's from there. the thought of her going back as Ambassador for the US tickles me, because of her testimony that due to her accent, she could never have accomplished all that she did in the US if she had stayed in the UK.

And it's not like Britain is going to declare war on us or anything. A great or experienced diplomat is not necessary. A connected person, with the President's ear, is right for that position.

(28,703 posts)I don't see her doing any damage. It could fill his desire to include a republican in his administration, which on principal I oppose.

(3,282 posts)the ambassador to the UK has a hard job. They don't. The UK has been our most reliable ally for the past 100 years. Any actual diplomacy that would need to happen with us would be between the President and the PM. The ground work that embassies need to do would be handled by the State professional staff.
The guy there now is just a rich heir who owns the JETS, who have been awful in the 20 years he's had them. Before that was the guy who ran CNET. Before that was an investment banker. Before that was a car salesman.
It's a cushy spot that gets handed out as a token to somebody the President wants to give a gift to. Cindy McCain is as used to speaking with, entertaining, and charming foreign leaders as anyone. She'll be fine.

(3,691 posts)choice of someone like Cindy McCain. While I don't think she alone delivered AZ to the Dems. At the least she had a major impact in the AZ race. The McCain-Biden life long friendship is inspiring.
