Senate Democrats hit Mitt Romney for strapping family dog to roof of car for 12-hour road trip
Well, look what just arrived in the inboxes of people on the DSCC's fundraising email list:

**************************

Jed,

I never thought I’d say this, but I agree with Newt Gingrich. Mitt Romney would be a terrible president.

Mitt Romney. Who likes “being able to fire people.” Who said “corporations are people.” Who laid off thousands and shipped jobs overseas. Who forced the family dog to ride on the car roof for a 12-hour drive!

In today's article, Swidey reveals that in the first version of the story he'd heard from a Romney "family friend," Mitt Romney did not hose down the dog but instead "drove the station wagon right through a car wash" with poor Seamus strapped atop!

Man-on-dog, or dog-on-car ?

Fox: Back in 1983, you took your Irish setter, Seamus, on a 12-hour road trip tied to the roof of your car.
Mitt: No, no, no, not quite like that.
Fox: Inside a kennel.
Mitt: Yes, yes.
Fox: What were you thinking?
Mitt: This is a completely airtight kennel and mounted on the top of our car. He climbed up there regularly, enjoyed himself. It was where he was comfortable. And we had five kids inside the car. My guess is he liked it a lot better in his kennel than he would have liked it inside.
Fox: Well, Massachusetts law prohibits carrying an animal on top of a car, even in a kennel, as cruel and inhuman. Do you really think you did nothing wrong?
Mitt: I didn’t know that there was any problem with that in terms of Massachusetts law. Love my dog. We’ve had a lot of dogs over the years. Love them. Seamus, as his name is, climbed up there all by himself, enjoyed his ride, and whether you’re in the back of a pickup truck or in the rooftop carrier, it was a good ride. He was a good friend of the family. - Fox interview from 12 Aug 2007

With the way he takes care of them, I'm sure he has had a lot of dogs over the years.

Moneypicture-gate will be insurmountable in the general election, and I can't wait to see that image in the commercials.

I actually think that Dog-gate could be spinned favorably by the Romney side, to counteract his rich-guy image. He wasn't flying on a private jet, he wasn't even putting his dog in a proper kennel, or hiring a dog-sitter while he was away -- he loaded all the Romneykids into the old station wagon - there's a lot of Romneykids - and put the family dog on the roof to drive up to Canada on a family trip.

It's actually rather "just folks" -- has some overtones of Chevy Chase in the Vacation movies.

Completely airtight?
For 12-hour road trip?
Something sounds wrong here.
Oh I know; these bastards don't even care enough to think their lies out well.

Soooooo, you put your dog in a container that you felt was airtight and risked finding a suffocated dog when you opened the container???
