1. Alleged laptop thief. :) We don't know yet.

But as Marcy Wheeler has pointed out, it is MUCH more interesting that at some point Riley seemed to be giving directions on where to go in the building.

30. Funny story about that. Remember Abby Hoffman?

He shocked everyone by coming back from Mexico years after disappearing and "self-surrendered." He said that he'd taken martial arts to change the way he moved, coloured his hair, took Berlitz language lessons to change the way he spoke....etc. Everything he could think of.

One day, in the little mountain town in which he lived, an American tourist saw him in the street and say "Hey! You're Abby Hoffman!" Said it completely deflated him and he figure he might as well just give up.

Kids today have no commitment.

32. How about the break-in at the FBI office in Media PA

Terrific book by Betty Medsger, "The Burglary" came out in 2014. In 1971, a group of folks broke into the FBI office in Media PA, and leaked details little by little to the press, including the existence of COINTELPRO, Hoover's program for domestic spying on citizens without probable cause. The group kept their secret for more than 40 years.

43. I recommend "The Burglary"

The author, Betty Medsger, was in touch with the conspirators for years, earning their trust, before writing her book on the break-in. The story of the break-in is thrilling enough, but the aftermath is equally fascinating, as the conspirators worked to get information out to the media, what should be leaked and what should be kept in reserve, how to be in contact with reporters, and suchlike.

Early on, they had a young man in their group who decided that breaking in to FBI offices wasn't his cup of tea, and he dropped out. The remaining folks worried a lot about whether he was going to report them either before or after they tried to break in to the office. They also had to worry about making copies of documents, because they had gotten information that photocopiers left a microscopic "fingerprint" on the copies it made that could trace a copy back to the machine that produced it. If the FBI got hold of the copies they made, could the copies be traced back to the photocopy machine they'd used?

33. Abbie lived

as Barry Freed along the Hudson River. He won a environmental award, and was on stage with Senator Moynigan at one point. As "Barry," Abbie became friends with Tommy "the Rabbi" Trantino, who was in Rahway State Prison, and an associate of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's. I was also friends with Tommy, as well as having a close friendship with Rubin.

In fact, while looking through a box of old photos, etc, yesterday, I found copies of memos they produced when Rubin became the head of the inmates' council. Tommy served as #2. But within a short time, in response to the work they were doing -- and the positive results, which included the advantage of having some of "Barry's" old connections -- the prison removed the pair late one night. Tommy would soon end up in Trenton, while Rubin had a stay at the Vroom Nuilding (for the criminally insane). One sees a section of that removal towards the beginning of the movie featuring Denzel Washington as Rubin. The legal team sued, and the judge found what they did to Rubin to be illegal. He got damages, that paid for a private investigator. (This, of course, led to the finding of the Caruso file, something small I played a role in.)

I have never heard the story about Mexico. Abbie turned himself in from his upstate New York home, after extended communications between his lawyer and the law.

Response to malaise (Reply #37)

Tue Jan 19, 2021, 02:05 PM

41. Last week,

my brother died. My son and I have been going through scrapbooks and photo albums. My brother ran a great amateur boxing team from a small village in NYS, that was the #1 team north of NYC. My son asked why it ended? For it had served kids from society's margins, kids not involved in high school sports, who became state champions? Reduced "problems" at home, in school, and in the community. It costs the village zero dollars, as it ran on my brother's dime. But they closed it, denying him the needed space in the community center.

This is speculation on my part. But my brother had started joining me in political activities. (I even introduced him to Abbie.) I think that systems do not allow for those who can organize people at the margins, teach them self-discipline, and serve as the group's leader. Just my opinion.

44. My son noted

that they do not favor a leader with 100 backers who are disciplined, but capable of protecting themselves.

I don't believe in death. Just a change of energy levels. The separation that those in the material world endure is real, though. The most painful, I think, is for parents that have children die. That's the worst pain I've seen. My brother had no more fear of death than he had of changing his outfit. He was a unique character, and I'm mighty happy and proud to have known him as my brother.

39. The anecdote I read said that he had turned himself in while in the US, but that was it for details.

It could have been Tampa or Dubuque - I don't remember the snippet mentioning New York, though.

I remember reading it as clear as day, but I can't remember the source. Given my choice of source materials at the time, it might well have been Rolling Stone.

The incident I mentioned was purportedly taken down from Hoffman's own mouth by the writer. Cross-sourcing was never easy back then, and I pretty much accepted anything in RS as gospel, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

I do know that he lived in Guadalajara, which is where he reportedly met Johanna Lawrenson.

You have had a very interesting cast of characters in your life!

40. I was thinking

about this last night. I thought maybe some of it came frome his book "Free" that he had published at the time he was underground. I couldn't find me copy ..... might have loaned it to someone, or one of my boys may have "borrowed" it in their teens ......but I will say that no one wanted that put out there except Abbie. It was like the man had a compulsive need to thumb his nose at authorities every so often.

And he might have talked about a vacation on those beaches in "Soon to be a Major Motion Picture," a later book than "Free." I never thought the plastic surgery made him look any different. It was his attitude as a quiet, highly intelligent man, more than his nose, that fooled people.

Abbie liked the islands up in the north part of the state. I have a close friend who owns one of them. If things were tense, one could easily get on the Mohawk Territory, and be in Canada, away from authorities. The funny thing is that my close friend looks a lot like Abbie, as my children point out when he visits.

All this brings up old memories. Dennis Banks stayed at Onondaga Territory back in the day. Eventually, circumstances allowed him to turn himself in. But there was always negotiations involved. I rambling here, I know, but I am still on my first cup of coffee. If I recall correctly, Abbie traveled to NYC to appear on some network show, then turned himself in. It was scripted, as much as any force on earth could script Abbie's behavior! Ha!

"Self" is really part and parcel of the whole surrender gestalt. If "self" isn't involved, you were "captured."

Anyway, my wife and I were talking about this case a couple of hours ago. I hope it's true, so I can tell her that the laptop is back.

On a related note, I suspect all govt laptops will come complete with RFID pretty soon.

As in “she was surrendered to authorities.” Maybe more common with objects (surrendering a passport), but can be used for a person if they’re in someone’s custody.
