That's why campaigns exist. They are supposed to provide time for people to learn more about the candidates. Usually, that works out OK, but not always.

However, it is always possible for an unworthy candidate to win an election, for whatever reason. It happens. Fortunately, they soon stand out as being unworthy of their office and are outnumbered by others who are competent, whether we agree with their political positions or not.

education, beliefs, etc.

Voters should have more sense than to vote for trump, Taylor, Cruz, and the like, but I'm for limited requirements to run.

were well-educated, upper-class white men (that is, pretty much the only people who could even vote) so they probably didn't think it was necessary to impose specific eligibility requirements on candidates.

Each party should rise to the occasion. If they had, maybe we wouldn't have ended up with the disgraced ex- president and fascism at our doorstep.
