Personal observations of republicans?

I live with three of them and am dating another. All these people are avowed republicans, my roomies watch faux, yet NONE of them cared a whit about watching the debates or Iowa or NH tonight. I think they've pretty much determined that this race is a lost cause.

There's a racist element, I think, at least for my roomies. And there's that gun thing the NRA keeps falsely disparaging Obama for. I dare not ask as we've had blow-outs because I'm an outspoken liberal (or was, until I figured out I best keep my mouth shut around here).

I converted my husband and my daughter thinks republicans are terrible. My republican cousins are very bitter right now.

it's actually been pretty interesting. We don't argue, we 'discuss' until it gets too heated, then I put the kibosh on it. And he has some liberal leanings, so maybe I'll convert him.

Yes, many of these places still exist in New England (CT). The upper Fairfield County town I grew up in is still Republican (and corrupt).
Going back thirty years ago, it was a one party town where Republican candidates for President regulary recieved 70% of the vote and people truely believed that they alone earned everything they have. They have no consideration for the investment that was put into this nations infrastructure or the struggles of the GI's. One thing I never saw was any large scale racism. That has changed 01/20/2009. Bigotry was always under the radar and implied. Now it's in the open. Remember, these cases are the minority. What makes them unique is that they are overt now.
