Why do I have a feeling Biden will have little patience for being jerked around on his cabinet noms?

when he feels enough time to reach a reasonable resolution has been given, I'm betting he slams the door on those trying to jerk him around. There will not be a big public blowup. He will simply pull the chair out from under them as they're sitting down and then never speak of it again.

Maybe he woos Murkowski by offering her the equivalent federal dollars of whatever it is Manchin is seeking. Then he lets the state of WV know what Manchin just threw down the drain that they could have had.

Maybe he just appoints his picks as Acting and moves on, leaving the malcontents standing around looking foolish.

1. I think the President is tough as steel. He won't roll over for the Republicans.

3. I wonder how much horsetrading is going on out of sight

I really don't believe the vindictive way that Manchin's actions are being taken - I think Biden has someone in his pocket that will give Manchin cover on at least one of these nominees. I'll admit I'm not sure about Tanden, since there's already someone else being talked about, but Haaland and Bacerra are likely safe.
Biden has been on point so far, and I can't believe he doesn't have contingencies that will get his nominees confirmed AND allow Manchin to save face back home.

4. Hey, Trump has shown us The Way. Do what you want, and let them react.

Based on recent practice, The White House no longer has to respond to questions, no longer has to show up for Hearings, does not need to honor subpoenas, and can pull in any clown off the street, hand him a security clearance, and put him in a position of power.

6. He can't just appoint his picks as "acting".

The limitations on who can be named to an acting cabinet post are clearly laid out in the Vacancies Act. And, with one exception that was overturned by the courts, even Trump followed the Vacancies Act.

8. I can see him doing serious horse-trading with Manchin,

but the President's not going to tell the people of West Virginia that Manchin lost the state a bunch of money. They'll blame Biden and Manchin, and then vote in a Republican in 2024.

It's all going to happen behind the scenes.

11. I can see the quiet but strong exercise of presidential power, but

not that this president can demand the senate comply with his wishes. The authoritarian Trump presidency combined with the obedient, authoritarian follower Republican senate corrupted all norms and smashed the balance of power, coming close to destroying our democracy. That's horribly not what they're supposed to be and not what we have now.

Republican senators have to deal with any president to get any legislation signed and his assistance for their states, yes, but the current set are intractably hostile to Democrats and this one's not a leader they obey. As for Democratic senators, they're overall eager to work with the president to get things done, but they don't work for the president and are determined to reestablish the senate's role under the constitution.

We really need to be glad of a return to the senate's proper use of its power, even if it means Biden doesn't get all those he first nominated through. It's desperately important, and no one realizes that more than Biden, who spent most of 50 years in the senate. Like any president, Biden of course has some nominations he really wants, and it's also probable that some other nominations are, though sincere wishes, considered potential strategic sacrifices.

As for what WV voters threw away, didn't we already take them to the top of the mountain and show them the world -- and have the majority loudly and defiantly reject it? Trump won by over 40 points. It's very hard for me to imagine Biden will do anything that might help throw Manchin or his seat to the Republicans in 2024. He knows the high-wire act that is Manchin's life, also that Manchin represents WVans ideologically diverse electorate about as well as anyone could. And both he and Manchin understand Manchin's new, high-visibility power in a 50-50 senate, which is proper for him to exercise even if we don't always like his choices.

14. Manchin is a sorry excuse for a Democrat. We tolerate him because he's a "number" and then

he does this. He's not even a number anymore.
