I work with a woman who is originally from Peru. She was the most loving woman and mother. We rejoiced together when our daughters got great jobs after their Masters and when they married and when they had kids. Before the election, she started to tell me things she heard on Spanish radio. She really didnt like Trump and did think Biden was ok, but she did believe stuff about Oprah and kids and Democrats, etc, but she was still herself. Yesterday, I realized, my friend jus my thinks Im either stupid or complicit. She is now a paranoid and very sad person. Evidently, the theory is the Biden is ok, but all the bad guys are setting up Kamala Harris to oust him. This lady is terrified. I wish I could help her, but she has been turned against me. The only thing I know is all the crap she is giving me is from a Colombian radio station and other Spanish language propaganda.

(866 posts)I never thought of that. She is an immigrant. I do think it is a tribute to Joe Biden that, despite all her husband told her and all the propaganda she heard, she told me that she really felt he was a good man.

(7,737 posts)She posted a photo of soldiers beside a photo of protesters with the caption, "These guys deserve free college, these do not."
I asked her about the veterans at the Capital riot. She deleted my post, and defriended me. She is the stepmother of two of my cousins. I have known her for over 35 years.
These people that listen to RW bullshit don't want to think. They want an authority figure that is not to be questioned. I truly- at this point- do not think there is any way to reach them.

(5,141 posts)A lot of people don't want to think, they just want to be told what to do. I said, "no, they just don't know any better and with knowledge comes the ability to make reasonable analysis".
I read recently that I was wrong, there is an authoritarian mindset consisting of people who just want to be told what to do.
We have No extended family on either side, because this right wing brain washing. They are racists, and think the Mexicans are taking over, they are MEXICAN on one side.
How do you fix that? When confronted with any facts, they stare at you as if you speak a different language, then change the conversation to shallow stuff about the weather.

(162 posts)I recently noticed and commented to my husband that my Trump supporting relatives will turn off and/or change the subject when you tell them something that they couldn't refute if they would think about it. They like to make their point but will shut you down when it becomes uncomfortable for them. It makes me feel sad and hopeless.

(5,141 posts)And when it becomes to hard to be you, around them, it's time to evaluate your family relationships.
You need to talk to a friend to help you with that or a therapist, but you will have to set boundaries for yourself, because family should not make you feel bad, it should be a safe place for you to be yourself, and talk about what matters to you also.
Our families when confronted with those statements, decided we weren't worth listening to, so we haven't talked to them in years...We don't miss them anymore, because we don't like them anymore.

(162 posts)I debated about including the word, "helpless" but decided to leave it in because that's kind of how I feel when I get cut off. It's never too hard to be me, I'm always me and when I speak. I'm 73 years old and found out who I am a long time ago. I decided a while back that my sisters and sons were more important to me than the differences we have over the Repugs. So mostly, we just discuss other stuff. I love interacting with my family and when issues come up they can't talk about we just talk about something else. I certainly wouldn't give them up because some subjects are off limits. I wish they could face reality. I recently realized that's why they shut down; they can't face reality. But it doesn't keep me from loving them or wanting a relationship with them. I just hope some day they will wake up to the truth. It also makes me sad when people on DU turn away from family because of politics. Politics shouldn't be more important than family.

(5,141 posts)I like to hear this, it's these relationships that can help bridge the gap between reality and the brainwashed.
Keep trying with them, and hopefully sooner than later something clicks, and they see what's really going on here with the GOP.
I wish my family was mentally pre-Reagan, after that they went downhill quickly. I don't even know them anymore, I don't think they know themselves.

(25,814 posts)It helps to realize that ALL religions essentially tell their followers: This is what to believe. Don't question it.
Some religions allow more wiggle room than others, but to be in a religion essentially means you give unquestioning loyalty to someone or something else. Life seems a lot simpler if you don't need to think for yourself.
Our schooling does something similar. Students are expected to learn and give back exactly what they've learned, which is fine in math, but not necessarily a good thing in other areas.

(866 posts)He does outreach to the Spanish community here in Virginia. I do think they did try to counter this misinformation here, but it definitely was a factor in the vote in Florida and Texas. President Biden fired the bad guys at VOA. My friend said she only listens to non American radio stations, especially from Columbia. I hope that a team of deprogrammers with knowledge of the community and media, can address this. The Hispanic vote was a factor in the election.
