black man. His name is Yahya Muslim. I suppose he could be a GOPer, but he doesn’t strike me as a supporter of the former guy. The other descriptors you used all seem to fit though.

that violent racism is a mental illness that often begins with childhood abuse.

Other professionals do not want to classify racism as mental illness because of concern that it would devalue the importance of personal responsibility and would treat a social issue as a medical one.

But, whether or not you consider it a mental illness, there does seem to be a frequent connection between childhood abuse and violent behavior when the child grows up, including racial violence. That does not excuse the behavior. They still are accountable for what they do. But recognizing the connection can possibly help society to address it.

An abused child is dehumanized. The child feels humiliated, but has a love/hate relationship with the abusive parents. He/she looks for a target to boost self esteem. When society at large holds some people as less equal, the child has a ready made target to hate. Filled with rage over his/her childhood humiliation, the child gains a feeling of superiority by attacking others.

Trump and Hitler are 2 classic examples of this kind of pattern.

This is not to say we should feel sorry for them. But it does point to a need to better address the issue of child abuse. Get children out of abusive situations and invest in the healing care that they need, before they become monsters.

Also, make it clear in law, and in our personal actions, that there are NO less than equal human beings for people to target as a "solution" to their own personal angst. This means eliminating systemic racism. Since racists are not motivated to eliminate racism of any type, it is up to the rest of us to take responsibility for making social equality a reality.

I do consider it so. And it is definitely something that's taught (sometimes subconsciously) and something that's learned.

The video of the two toddlers, one black & one white, running to each other... arms wide open... ending in a big hug... it always warms my heart.

that is where I first heard the idea mentioned.

I am aware of his promotion of Sylvia Browne and other supposed psychics, but considered that just part of the nonsense that often goes with talk shows.

But you make a good point that he is not a good person to cite since it weakens the validity of the point being made.

Ugh I can still hear that in his voice - blargh!

But while many perceive an increase in anti-Asian racism and violence, there is no evidence as yet to support the idea that recent Bay Area victims were targeted because they were Asian. Antoine Watson, 19, was arrested for the assault on Ratanapakdee and charged with murder and Yahya Muslim – who the Alameda County public defender says is homeless and struggling with mental health issues – was arrested for assaulting several people in Chinatown, including the 91-year-old. So far neither has been charged with a hate crime.

Asians are having trouble getting the crimes classified as hate crimes when the attackers are non-White. And note that the press refrains from identifying the race of non-White attackers.
