"Fireside chats" were pretty few and far between, which is why they were so effective. The novelty was one of the things that made people tune in.
Compare that to how many people have even been aware of the weekly Saturday morning "presidential messages." Off hand I don't even know if that's still a thing.
Abraham Lincoln had the same media savvy. His letters to the editor were highly effective in swaying public opinion, but he used them sparingly. Some are relevant today. For instance, when he wrote, "Must I shoot a simple-minded soldier boy who deserts, while I must not touch a hair of a wily agitator who induces him to desert?"
The modern equivalent might be: "Must we put the addled simple-minded racists in jail for storming the Capitol and trying to overthrow the government, while we allow the wily enablers who set the stage for mayhem and murder to remain free and unpunished?"
I have the feeling President Biden knows this history.
It's so great to have a president again who actually reads for information and enjoyment.
