It would be amazing to have a calm, rational, fact-based discussion on this subject. Is that even possible? Will it ever be possible? I hope so, and will not be deterred by bullies.

decision.
Merriam-Webster definition of hypothesis:

b : an interpretation of a practical situation or condition taken as the ground for action
2 : a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences
and: Synonyms: proposition, supposition, theory, thesis

By the way, Isaac Asimov writes a clear definition of hypothesis/theory in his book
The Universe. I recommend that anyone with an interest read this book and become
aware that it's often many years and even centuries before a hypothesis/theory is
accepted as fact.

(25,816 posts)Hypothesis: a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
On the other hand a theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can incorporate laws, hypotheses and facts.
Sometimes a hypothesis, after rigorous testing, can become a theory.
Unfortunately, a lot of people use the word theory to mean wild-ass guess, which it is not.

Most of the brilliant scientific findings started with the hypothesis.
