1a : an assumption or concession made for the sake of argument
b : an interpretation of a practical situation or condition taken as the ground for action
2 : a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences

By the way, Isaac Asimov writes a clear definition of hypothesis/theory in his book
The Universe. I recommend that anyone with an interest read this book and become
aware that it's often many years and even centuries before a hypothesis/theory is
accepted as fact.

2. A hypothesis is NOT the same thing as a theory.

Hypothesis: a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

On the other hand a theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can incorporate laws, hypotheses and facts.

Sometimes a hypothesis, after rigorous testing, can become a theory.

Unfortunately, a lot of people use the word theory to mean wild-ass guess, which it is not.

3. A scientific theory is fact based, tested and verified with the scientific method.

The hypothesis is a legitimate proposed explanation which is a starting point for further scientific inquiry.

Most of the brilliant scientific findings started with the hypothesis.

6. Merriam-Webster notwithstanding, a theory and a hypothesis are not the same thing.

Just because people don't know the difference between the two, does not mean they are the same.
