(82,849 posts)Thank you, Sen. Cruz. Let's continue to do nothing, and see if that has any effect on mass shootings. Every decent human being on the planet should abhor you for your lethal stupidity.

(2,216 posts)but I think the gun desire is more of a symptom than a cause. In any case it is a strong indicator.
In the area where it happened, when I was little almost every truck had a rifle, fishing pole and level on a gun rack. Most families had 5 guns but all of those families went hunting and camping regularly. No so much today. Now they have twice the guns, ten times the ammo and none of them have a backpack with a frame. They don't hunt, you can be sure of that. If they did, we wouldn't have a wild hog problem.

(32,633 posts)I never owned a gun myself, by my Dad was a sometimes deer hunter and he had a few guns in the house. They were all safely locked away. Now that my Dad has passed, we're back to being a "no guns" family.
I understand your point, that 50 years ago owning a gun was a rite of passage or something. People were taught gun safety and respecting your weapon. Not any more. Owning and display a gun these days means you're a right-wing a-hole. The few people out there who aren't right-wing a-holes need to prove otherwise, or they're included in the gunz club.
It may not be fair, but that's the way it is.

These days many people who have no interest in hunting to eat are buying guns.
