Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIn a poll out today 43% of Republicans
say they will not get a vaccine shot if they can avoid it.
Its infuriating to be aware of Republican leaders who have secretly gotten the vaccine but lie to their constituents or downplay it, so they don't lose their base.

(13,142 posts)You're polling a group of people for whom lying is fine. What's the scientific basis for evaluating their responses?

(14,784 posts)mandate that their employees be vaccinated unless a physician says they should not be. Threaten their income and most will fold. That won't get us to 100% but it will get us high enough.
Also, most of these assholes are probably virtue signaling (in the mind of a deranged Repuke anyhow) in their answer. Their actual behavior may be quite different.
doc03
(35,148 posts)and I believe most businesses will eventually mandate employees be vaccinated. Then there's travel. It won't surprise me if airlines, cruise ships, trains require passengers to be vaccinated in order to use their services.

(5,928 posts)surprised me by getting the vaccine last week. They are stone-cold Republicans and I'll bet, when asked by a poll, they would have said they weren't going to get the vaccine.

(51,974 posts)At virtually every step, they've sided with the virus at the expense of humans.
They object to people even voluntarily wearing masks, I mean how can you explain that if they've not trying to help the disease along.

(18,902 posts)and we're the hottest COVID spot in the entire state right now. The reason? Western New York, with a few exceptions, is the "red" part of the state. So many right-wing nuts here refuse to be vaccinated we'll never stamp out the virus here. It's truly sickening. They see it as a political stand and, of course, an attack on their masculinity. What a bunch of obstinate morons.

(21,146 posts)I am near Buffalo. Rates in my community (small city in rural area outside of Buffalo) are climbing like they did around the winter holidays. I think it's a combination of anti maskers and the more contagious UK strain which is all over NY now.
liberal_mama
(1,495 posts)Lots of people not being careful, I suppose. I can't believe rates are this high again.

(11,415 posts)and some hot spots here as well. Whats bad is how many people I see not wearing a mask at all now and walking right into the stores.

(18,902 posts)western NY has the top percentage, and Gov. Cuomo was quite concerned about it last week. I'm just so sick of these assholes not wearing a mask, wearing it so it doesn't cover their nose, and just making a public health hazard out of themselves. Employees in the stores don't say a word to them. This pandemic will never end with these selfish turds running around.
wnylib
(21,146 posts)are the problem. I have asked a few employees to cover their noses while I'm at their register. I have stopped going to the 7/11 near me because ALL of the employees except one leave their noses hanging out of their useless masks. Their customers buy slices of pizza and drinks in a cup and browse through the store eating and drinking with their masks around their necks. The whole store is a covid petri dish.
Whenever I go out, I am double-masked and wear gloves. I have a sanitation ritual that I go through when I get home. I still need eye protection beyond my glasses. I have some goggles, but have not worn them in public. I would rather have less conspicuos safety glasses with side and top shields.
I've had both Moderna shots. My two weeks post shots will be up this Friday. But vaccinations are not 100% effective and I don't feel safe with cases rising all around this area.

(18,902 posts)isn't it? I've seen the same thing myself. We're never going to get rid of this virus with idiots like this acting like it's business as usual. The human race is doomed, and stupidity will be the cause.
wnylib
(21,146 posts)that covid is no worse than the flu. I asked what made her so sure of that. She said her doctor told her. I said I doubted that. She switched to saying that she knew because she had it twice. I asked if she was tested both times and she said yes. Then she said she was a nurse. I asked why she was working in a retail store. She said it was part time after retiring. She appeared to be around 35, but might have been older.
I said she had changed her story too many times to be credible. She just gave me a smug grin.
I thought of a better answer later, of course. When she said it was like the flu, I wish I had said, "Yeah, the 1918 Spanish flu."

(21,146 posts)I was in the same store this week. She did not seem to recognize me, but had pulled her mask up for the customer ahead of me. When she finished with my purchases, she said, "Have a nice day." i said, "You too, Nurse Ratchet."

(18,902 posts)is at SUNY Potsdam. Every other State run center is booked solid, but SUNY Potsdam always has openings. I originally made an appointment there when I couldn't find one closer to me. It would have meant a 300 mile drive, each way, and that was a month in the future. Luckily I found something else before that appointment came due, so I canceled it. The population is rather sparse in "The North Country", and they're mostly republigoons anyway.
Good for your Mum and Dad though!

(51,432 posts)I wish the store and restaurant owners, hospital workers, public transportation, etc. would refuse to admit them without proof of a vaccination.
When prisoners were released from German concentration camps they got special identification saying they were sprayed with DDT for their health and everybody else's health. It wasn't a political statement.

So that is working and I wish more places would require it.
