Aborted Fetuses: The Awkward Guest at Your Super Bowl Party
By Kate Sheppard| Wed Jan. 11, 2012 10:43 AM PST
Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry has been running graphic ads of aborted fetuses in key primary states, as my colleague Tim Murphy has reported. Now the greusome ads are coming to the Super Bowl.
Nothing says "pass the dip" like a bloody fetus. Normally, Terry wouldn't be able to get these kinds of ads on television. So he's launching a non-serious campaign for president (running as a Democratic challenger to President Obama) in order to exploit a loophole in Federal Communications Commission rules that requires station to run campaign ads in the weeks ahead of a primary electionno matter how grisly they might be. In the 45 days ahead of a primary and 60 days ahead of a general election, candidates for federal office can run whatever they want on local stations, as long as they pay for the airtime.
Yes, the FCC can try to fine you a half-million dollars for a "wardrobe malfunction," but bundles of bloody body parts is A-okay.
Terry can't, however, force the networks to run his ads nationally, as Jezebel points out. So if you live in a state that doesn't have a primary within 45 days of the Superbowl, you can enjoy your nachos without looking at fetal body parts. (Which, it's probably worth pointing out, are from late-term abortions; the vast majority of abortions take place in the first trimester.) But if you live in a Super Tuesday state or any of the others voting in February or early March, be prepared. The Greeley Gazette writes that Terry and his group have ads "ready to go" in 40 markets.

(110,159 posts)why should this be any different. so the men can sit in their lazyboys, drink their beer and watch ads dehumanize women on all counts.
sounds just like what the men keep demanding is their god given privileged right.

(35,773 posts)Thanksgiving, Christmas, the 4th of July. Those are all fine, but what we really need is more family rants about politics.
Yup.
That's what we need.
I love Super Bowl Sunday. I head up to the mountain, put on my skis, and I wear myself out on the cross country trails. No problems finding parking, or a quiet place to break for lunch. It's awesome!

Made for a great xmas card!

(82,849 posts)And I will definitely not mind using Terry and his extremist nutballery to paint every anti-choicer with the same brush. Those who welcome being placed in the Terry camp aren't worth talking to any further. Those who disavow Terry need to explain to me very carefully why they think he's an extremist nutball before the conversation goes any further.
I think there's a very important national conversation to be had over abortion, but it has to proceed from some point other than where the likes of Randall Terry want to push it.

Seems to be the norm for many, many crime and police dramas.

"Hello, Channel 1? I'd like to complain about the commercial you just ran during the super bowl. No, I won't hold. We are having a party, and some of our guests are sick - like vomiting sick. We won't forget this - and we are making sure we get the names of all the other advertisers."

(21,236 posts)I created a petition this morning directed at NBC to reject those four bloody fetuses ads.
I'd really like to share it on DU.
Do I have to have permission, or can I just post it?
And, if I can post it, which forum?

(14,337 posts)should not have to be forced to see aborted fetuses, anymore than they should have to see a dead BinLaden, corpses, or anything else their parents don't want them to see on national broadcast TV. I beleive it was ruled that these "ads" cannot be shown in the vicinity of public schools, so why should they be shown on a "family oriented" broadcast of the Football?
If I lived in an area where this was being broadcast, I would most certainly call my local station. We heard enough years ago about a wardrobe misfunction on the Super Bowl, but this is far, far worse than an unplanned mishap of a natural female body function.
