Employers: Want employees? Maybe work to mean "Must have reliable transportation" includes the bus.

On Craigslist, I can find close to 5,000 "help wanted" ads featuring those four words.

Now employers, from what I read in these ads, it's clear it means one thing: You need to have a car in order to even work at your establishment.

But having a car is not cheap:
* We're talking about gas
* We're talking about insurance
* We're talking about if the employee is ticketed or fined to/from work, then that is on them
* And if the employee is purchasing a car to get to work... well, let's just remember that cars do not grow on trees

"If you want a job, why don't you just move to where the jobs are at?" - The unemployed are told.

Have you considered moving to a part of the city where the buses are at?

"I guess you're going to have to be more thrifty and organized..." - The unemployed are told.

Have you considered putting aside long vacations and bonuses in order to lobby city officials to improve public transportation services... or have them at all?

"You are lazy, you don't want to work!" - The unemployed are told.

Have you considered that maybe people don't want to take the meager wages you give them and don't want to just see it go into getting to and from work?

I don't know... something to think about instead of just blaming unemployment benefits. Anybody want to give it a try though?

There is no demand for $8.00/hr jobs. If you can't pay a living wage, you have no business being in business.

It's a sense of entitlement, some of these people really think they are entitled to have people work for them.

4. I had a friend lose a job because he rode the bus or his bike

He and his wife own one car, and she uses it for her job (social work home inspections). He lives less than five miles from work, bike lanes all the way, and he always rides unless there si a deluge or ice, then he rides the bus. They do this for money and carbon footprint.

He does high-level IT stuff which I don't fully understand.

He lost a job once, after a great interview and the background check, because when HR sent him an info request for a parking pass, he said he didn't need one. THEY FIRED HIM BECAUSE THEY SAID HE WASN'T QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB UNLESS HE HAD RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. Which he had. He was like, if I can't bike in or ride a bus, it means work would be closed anyway (ie hurricane or huge snowstorm). They didn't budge. So, he kept his current job, then got a way better job later where, get this: he got rewards like gift cards for using a bike and the bus.

If I could use an ebike or a subway to get to work, I would do it in a second.

I mean, reliable transportation can be a bus, a bike, shank's mare, a skateboard, whatever.

Are the first people who are blaming today’s staffing problems on people being “lazy” and taking unemployment.

Yeah, I’d want to take unemployment rather than work for the people like that too.

country (a fact confirmed by the heads of 27 transit systems around the country). There is NO bus service at all to the medical complexes and services on the northeast side of town NO service to a number of residential areas. There is NO commitment to transit or the environment. And the wage scale sucks. Sooo. . .reliable transportation??? This city, where one would THINK that the care and nurture of this beautiful environment would be of at least some small concern, only cares about cars.
Oh, and we also have some of the worst roads in the state.
