But by all means, make fun of the speaking style and intelligence of WV voters; always a good way to build support.

I personally have absolutely had it with those people, and found the OP to be funny.

(8,558 posts)Great way to make friends there, buddy. Saw this garbage the last time you did it and liked it just as little then as I do now.
Sincerely,
Southern woman who would be far less civil about this if I wasn't on DU.

(15,124 posts)not intentionally offend each other.
That said, I have often been offended by those who fail to "keep that in mind" and rather than give another DUer the benefit of the doubt, choose to be thin-skinned and lash out at an ally.
Surely, you cannot believe that my intent was to brand all West Virginians as ignorant or illiterate. But, SOME do talk like my post did. Not only is that true, some of my most beloved family members spoke like that. My grandma, "Nanny" caught "feesh" in the "crick" and hoped they'd find "url" on her poor land.
In closing, in my opinion, my OP did not use a "southern accent". There were no "druthers" or "y'alls" or any of the other smooth and soothing usages that, in my mind, characterize "southron" speech. My OP had more of a hillbilly tenor, a mode of speech with which I am personally familiar.
If we can't---"cain't"?---laugh at ourselves, we invite others to.

I am offended that we are going to lose everything under the Democratic watch and that is because of Manchin.

(15,124 posts)the term "pearl clutchers" to describe several people who had posted that they would not attend a DC march because they "feared counter-protesters" or words to that effect.
Now, anyone had the right to criticize me for misjudging those folks or for just plain being too rough on them. But, that was not the objection voiced by most who posted emotional "offended" responses.
Somehow, "pearl clutcher" had become a sure "tell" that I was a "homophobe". If you think you've seen that term used here several terms in the past few years without any objection, you are absolutely correct. I have been tempted several times to question why the "homophobic" nature of the term had not drawn objections when someone else used it, but I decided to "let sleeping dogs lie" and "move on". There were elections to win.
And, now, for using what I would describe as "hillbilly dialect" to point out Joe Manchin's fence-straddling attempts to placate Republicans, I find myself at the bottom of another pile of DUers OFFENDED by my "mocking and insulting" hillbillies and southernors.
I thought the professed outrage about "pearl clutchers" was sad and unfortunate.
I think this is, too. A mountain has been made out of what was never even a mole hill.
