(153,138 posts)it's not like you could not go outside
Irish_Dem
(46,880 posts)I did not go outside much at all for a year.
I just don't think that was true for most folk.
Irish_Dem
(46,880 posts)Many of us literally did not venture outside the house.
Groceries and food delivered.
Shopping at Amazon.
So we didn't have to go out at all. Many did not even make doctor or dentist appts.
It was a scary time and we did not want to die a horrible death.

I think a better representation would be venturing out and about without a mask.....that I still won't do.

(46,880 posts)And people with children who have been afraid for the health of their little ones.
Biden has allowed many of us to have our lives back.
Right, I am still wearing a mask when I am out.
But thank God, I am now going out and having somewhat of a life.
It is a miracle.

(153,138 posts)science.....and voting
Irish_Dem
(46,880 posts)But the science is a "miracle" of the 21st century.
For the vaccine to have been developed so quickly.
When I was very young, there were few vaccines. People died of polio, measles, whooping cough, etc.
And for Joe to take office with the GOP attempts to overthrow the election and the government, and the voter suppression.
That was another "miracle".
But yes of course, I am using some hyperbole which I am prone to do.
Mea Culpa!

(6,546 posts)It was a scary time, and still is to some extent.
Irish_Dem
(46,880 posts)But with the vaccine shots, I felt the fear reduce.
And yes, we can still get sick, but hopefully not die.

(6,546 posts)I will continue masking per my PCP's recommendations. I will continue masking for the foreseeable future. I've worked too hard to stay alive to take risks. That is just who I am.
Irish_Dem
(46,880 posts)I don't have serious health problems at this time, but I have just recovered from some health issues and I am not going to take chances. I am going to keep a mask on when in public, but I am getting out more. To the grocery, stores, etc.
And have had some vaccinated friends to my condo.
But yes I am staying with the mask for the time being.

In two weeks I start playing bridge back at the club.
Hurray!

(16,357 posts)I think you may be looking at it a little too literally. It's true that most of us have not been literally locked inside our homes for the past 14 months, but our activities have been curtailed in lots of big and little ways. In a symbolic sense, there are doors in all of our lives that have been closed during this past year. This illustration captures the feeling of release that a lot of us are feeling right now as those doors are starting to open again, and I love it. 😇

(14,862 posts)in a few other parts of The Bronx, a lot ot time in Manhattan (Inwood, Hudson Heights, Upper West Side, Mid Town, Chelsea, West, Greenwich and East Village, the area around the old Twin Towers, to the Southern tip), plus my old Brooklyn nabe, BBG, Downtown Brooklyn etc
All this is say usually from mid-April through New Year's - but cutting down to 30% Jan - early April because of winter wearher.
Since March 12th 2020 through now May 17 2021 -
I've barely been out of my neighborhood. Mostly across the street for 2 blocks for my shopping.
Cut my traveling by 95% through Aug, about 85% - 90% Sept till now. (No where outside of NYC, either) I'm 68.
So that New Yorker cover protrays both emotionally, and travelwise exactly how I feel. 👍

(7,275 posts)Maybe even a little bit understated in some respects, and a little quiet, yet stunning all at once.
All things considered, all the chaos and darkness. yeah, let there be light, and let the doors open once again.

(51,583 posts)then I thought the illustrator turned the Empire State Bldg into a vaccination syringe . I wonder if the artist was tempted to morph their cast shadows into a symbolic image.

(58,785 posts)Where all things are once again possible. And of course the sun is shining. Love that.
I don't think it's meant to suggest people didn't go outside at all so much as that their worlds had become very closed in and limited. The suggestion of caution or timidity on viewing the immense wonder of what was once normal and had been lost is sad, but it has affected some people that way.
Lol, and agree this does do better than the hackneyed tunnel thing.
