Theres an old saying that everybody has their price.
So, what would it take for Manchin to change his mind and vote to end the filibuster?
Fill in the blank..
Schumer and the DNC and wealthy Democratic donors should offer him ____________________.

I'd donate to that particular cause.

(276 posts)Maybe focus on deploying broadband internet, water, electricity, telephone, television, and other utilities to underserved communities in WV. If that fails threaten to take away his seniority in committees. If he squawks about that, take away his committee memberships.

(31,261 posts)That is a Left dream that sticks in the throats of even some Left people. There should be a reasonable amount of time to check the eligibility of a person before that person gets a ballot.
We can strip away all the republican voter suppression attempts without insisting on items like Election Day voter registration and Election Day as a holiday.
dflprincess
(28,075 posts)The voter has to turn up with ID (or if their ID does not have the current address year, they can use ID & and a utility bill that confirms the address) or a voter currently registered in the precinct that can vouch for them.
There are heavy penalties for both the new voter and the voter who vouched for them if the registration is fraudulent. There have been very few problems and we would have heard about them because the 'Cons have been looking for them ever since the state started same day registration.
Currently, same day registration votes are not considered "provisional", though the Republicans in the State Senate have slipped a clause into an Ominbus bill that would make them provisional.
Like Republicans everywhere, Minnesota Republicans are concerned about too many of the "wrong kind" of people voting. Fortunately, the DFL controls the state House and Governorship.

Apparently he believes the MSM lies that the U.S. is a center right nation. one of the biggest whoppers ever, but a distant second to the much older and more damaging lie, the MSM is liberal.

(8,922 posts)Perhaps the pressure needs to come from the states he's trying to take away democracy from. Maybe they have something they can withhold from West Virginia if they don't want to be disenfranchised in Federal elections because of West Virginia's out of control Senator.

(10,828 posts)what the Republicans are dangling over Manchin after that comment Grassley made to one of his constituents (caught on a hot mic) about the fate of the filibuster. The constituent was worried the Dems would eliminate the ruling but Grassley assured the individual that they (Republican leadership) were confident they had "Manchin nailed down."
Nailed down to what? I'd like to know.
What bug have they implanted in his brain? Or what have they offered/promised the man? Because none of Manchin's reasoning makes any sense in today's reality.
If he's truly concerned about maintaining the integrity of the Senate, then reforming the filibuster is a means to that end. Doing nothing means we get more of the same--the minority jamming the majority at every turn. Even going so far as refusing a bipartisan committee to investigate January 6th, a day on which their own lives were threatened. How much more evidence would Manchin need to admit McConnell and his crew's primary objective is to block the Biden agenda? All of it.
Does. Not. Make. Sense.

(10,870 posts)Something like this from Pres Biden:
Id like to commend Senator Manchin and a few others in the Democratic caucus. They have bent over backwards, forwards, and sideways to work with many of their Republican colleagues on a number of important subjects facing our nation.
But because of the strict intimidation of the current Republican leadership, those reasonable Republican Senators voices have been silenced.
Subsequently, I plan to meet with Senator Manchin and others to discuss what a new path forward may look like. Inaction is not acceptable .
