The coronavirus might be receding in much of the United States, but it continues to spread in communities with low Covid-19 vaccination rates, where highly contagious virus variants pose a threat to those who have not had shots.
In Smith County, Tenn., where only 20 percent of people are fully vaccinated, there has been an almost 700 percent increase in hospitalizations for Covid-19 over the past two weeks, according to a New York Times database. In Trousdale, Tenn., where only 23 percent of people have had two vaccine doses, hospitalizations have also surged by 700 percent in the same period.
The increase is not a coincidence, said Dr. Ted Delbridge, executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. People who become ill with Covid-19 now are, in most age groups, twice as likely to end up hospitalized as people who got the virus earlier in the course of the pandemic, Dr. Delbridge said.
In Maryland, of those between the ages of 50 and 59 who contracted Covid-19 over the winter, about 8 percent were hospitalized, he said. From the end of April through the beginning of June, the hospitalization rate in that group was 19 percent.

Kind of goes without saying but unfortunately needs to be reiterated.

But also, this is north GA; last I looked a couple weeks ago, our county vaccination rate was 19%. We're in the more rural, less metro end of the county, so my assumption is the vaccination rate here was below that average.
It's too early for it to have gotten through to recalcitrants here that a) the dramatic drops in case rates and severity do not apply to unvaccinated populations like ours and b) that Covid's getting worse and starting to hit young people harder.

45% Fully vaxxed
53% at least one dose
I'm guessing your county has somewhat fewer than 2.7 million inhabitants?

(4,897 posts)letting the virus run rampant because it was affecting liberal areas and killing Democratic Party voters.....seems to be backfiring a bit.

Some got it pretty hard too, such as her mother. But she said the risk of the vaccine is unknown and might be as risky as COVID-19. She said she's not afraid and she wants to go on and live her life, not being in fear.
I wish I knew that before she started working on my mouth. She asked why I was afraid and I said I have some immunodeficient people in my family, but noted that the extended family of 15 or so--NONE of them had contracted VID yet! I said that the people who politicize a virus and those who say Jesus takes the wheel are what scares me. And to that, I treat everyone as a carrier.

These ridiculous ideas they have about side effects from the vaccine have absolutely no basis in fact. It's all Facebook and Twitter bullshit, passed on from their uncle's boss's son's best friend's girlfriend's cousin, who knows someone who positively had something like that. But they won't believe scientific evidence from Doctors with 12 years of college.
Ignorance is what I fear, and people who seem so damned proud to be ignorant.

These people need to think their conspiracy-nut side effects through to their logical conclusion. Of course if these people were using logic, this entire line of thinking would be moot, wouldn't it?

Over all US death rate for the duration of the pandemic is about 1.8%. Rolling 7 day average on June 8th shows the death rate for the past week is 2.9%.
It was 2.7% for the week on June 1st.

(1,218 posts)And we are always the only ones in the grocery store, etc., wearing masks. Of course we wear them, these morons are spreading it. A carnival began last weekend, it was so crowded people had to park far away and walk to it. With 75% not vaccinated. I imagine we will have a spike in a couple of weeks. I get that when they get sick, they tax our entire health system, but I really think this culling of the herd will ultimately make us stronger. It's their choice.

(2,725 posts)What percentage of deaths from covid are people who have been vaccinated vs. those who have not.
If these numbers were widely reported, I believe it would cause the vaccine-hesitant to rethink things.
