it became very clear very quickly that if we were going to mandate masks, someone had to enforce that.
making retail workers and rent-a-cops do it was going to get people killed.
i was SOOOOO disturbed to find out how many people didnt care if i died. not strangers. neighbors i had known for 20 yrs.
you can make people give a shit, and clearly way too many didnt.

I commented a few minutes ago in another DU discussion on the Georgia murder.
Its obvious that its time to relieve store cashiers from trying to enforce a mask mandate. The CDC has said its safe for vaccinated individuals. Period. Why are stores still heavily enforcing a mask mandate?
Remember the heartbreaking stories years ago when cashiers were under pressure to fight the robbers and not hand over the cash? I recall so many shootings. Well this is the new fight.
Dont bother. Remind the customer of the mandate. But why do we have mandates in stores now? New York has been a very restrictive state since the beginning, but we are all on the honor system now, in NY. If you are vaccinated, you can go without a mask. Period. There is a sign in the window stating that fact.
Even a good guy (security guard) with a gun couldnt stop a bad guy (idiot maskhole) with a gun.

30% or more of the people just don't give a shit about others.
The MAGAts were flocking to the stores when NJ lifted the mask mandate, and they were getting in masked people grills, almost like they were hoping for a confrontation. I do not trust anyone, because you just don't know. These fundie people were holding numerous group gatherings and parties at their home, both adults and kids, and no one was wearing a mask this year and last.

(82,849 posts)Some people (and you can guess who with high certainty of being right) are wondering why we can't just go on the honor system when it comes to vaccination status and mask wearing. A significant portion of our population can't be trusted - they've shown the rest of us quite clearly that they will behave recklessly without regard to anyone else.

(44,972 posts)So how exactly would that work? Seems like the other way around, killer got pissed because cdc backed off masks, yet store was still requiring them.

(70,023 posts)and i'm sure the policy people are sick of it.
once we had the vax, and people could protect themselves, i think they saw they wouldnt be able to keep fighting it.

The mask change made perfect sense considering the information we have.

(8,684 posts)ALL insurance companies must deny coverage for untaxed people. $50,000 plus hospital bills have a way of getting attention. If you have no insurance and still will not get a free life saving Vax, go home when Covid calls. You have freedom to choose, no freedom to kill others for your ignorance. In time, Darwin will make us great again.

Local governments everywhere decided to lift capacity restrictions and mask mandates soon after the CDC decision.
Individual businesses still vary widely on mask enforcement. I've seen some that are very strict and others that don't care at all. Some of my local restaurants are 100% open and others are still takeout only and plenty that are a combination. Most businesses here still require their employees to wear masks even if they don't require customers to.
