The Name Karen Drops Significantly On A List Of Popular Baby Names

Calling someone a Karen has become shorthand for a person — usually a white woman — who uses their privilege to be a jerk. The name fell 171 spots on the Social Security Administration's list.

NOEL KING, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Noel King. Calling someone a Karen is loaded these days. It's become shorthand for a person, usually a white woman, who uses their privilege to be a jerk, someone who asked to see the manager or something worse. Last year, the name Karen fell 171 spots on the Social Security Administration's list of most popular baby names. I guess people are taking the advice don't be a Karen literally. It's MORNING EDITION.

Every Karen I have known personally has been a smart, with-it woman. I don't know how this name got singled out for abuse.

I also think of the fine entertainers Karen Carpenter, Karen Black, (spelling variations) Karyn White and Karine Vanesse.

at some point in the 60s? 70s? when it became pejorative. This is like watching the birth of a new volcano - it's totally unstoppable, the memes are flowing and hardening on youtube. In short - it's a done deal.

I always wondered what his parents were thinking. But it turns out that in 1941 when Richard was born, "dick" wasn't the slang term we know and love today.

as popular today. I would think the same of Barbara and Martha and some others.

Things like changing demographics and just different times being the reason.

When I was a kid I can remember maybe one or two classmates named Karen, but now it would seem kinda weird to see a little baby girl named Karen. Of course, I also haven't come across any baby girls named Mildred, Louise, or Bertha lately either!

Names run in cycles. My grandmother was named Hannah, and for a lot of years that name was considered an old lady's name. My sister decided early on that if she had a girl, she would name her Hannah since it was unique at that time. Of course, by the time my niece was born 25 years ago, Hannahs were a dime a dozen! She still named her Hannah, though!

The same thing happened to names like Emma, Emily, and Sophia. When I was young, those would have been considered old lady's names. Not anymore!

Of course, in about 20 years there are going to be a lot of old ladies named Tiffany, Brittany, and Heather

Adolf of Osnabrück was known as the "Almoner of the Poor", a literal saint. Not only is his name trashed, with the California water crisis, nowadays even the near-association with almonds makes him sound bad.
