Pew Report: Majority of white women (53%) voted for Trump in 2020, up 6% from 2016

This is a larger percentage than Trump's support from white men (50%).

Women (especially white women) swung toward Trump

The idea that a majority of white women voted for Trump quickly became one of the 2016 election's most-cited statistics, as many Hillary Clinton supporters — particularly women — were outraged to see other women support Trump.

While that statistic was repeated over and over, Pew's data ultimately said this wasn't true — they found that in 2016, white women were split 47% to 45%, slightly in Trump's favor but not a majority.

This year, however, it appears that Trump did win a majority of white women. Pew found that 53% of white women chose Trump this year, up by 6 points from 2016.

This support contributed to an overall shift in women's numbers — while Clinton won women of all races by 15 points in 2016, Biden won them by 11 points in 2020. Combined with men's shifts described above, it shrank 2016's historic gender gap.

Notably, the swing in white women's margin (5 points altogether) was significantly smaller than white men's swing toward Biden (13 points altogether).

Living in a NE state, I know a L O T of white women over the last decade who have really hardened as "conservatives," mostly driven by christianity.

I have always know/seen the libertarian and straight up hard right men, but white women are more open about their STRONG feelings on it now, which fits with the trend this article notes.

To me, this is reflective of the ever increasing domination of culture in our politics, white women coming home to the tribe because more practical aspects of politics and policy are more and more being drown out.

I am all for doing right by the marginalized in this country, and fully support meaningful reform and policy. But, the more the focus and discussion of our politics is culture based, the more we lose, cause we are so diverse it just distracts and spreads us out while it unites the right.

There are a lot more women in the US who would vote the way their husbands do, or how their husbands tell them to, than the other way around.

Chump and evangelical churches tried to turn 2020 into the "rapture-armageddon" showdown, and it really churned up a lot of crazies that normally aren't regular voters. I think that's were the 6% uptick may have come from.

Speaking as a 70-year-old white woman, it makes me sick to think that ANY American women were stupid enough to be fooled by that orange asshole. But it is what it is.

For the most part, my white women friends in the Philly burbs were strongly anti-Trump.
I suspect in other regions, especially the south, that is not the case.

32. I will never, never understand this

I live in a very red, rural, mostly retirement county in FL. I take, and teach, water aerobics at a local gym. The vast majority of the women who attend these classes are RW Trump humpers - including the other instructor, a 65 YO black woman married to a white man. You can probably imagine what she and her husband dealt with when they married 35+ years ago. His family disowned him, at one point they moved north to escape the hatred being strewn their way.

Still, she's a RW Trumper, as are most of the class. She's an evangelical Christian and was a pastor. She also falls for all the crazy conspiracy theories. I look around at all these white women, most of them very nice people, and I don't understand. I will never understand how they can embrace hate and lies. But I feel more and more alienated from them.

According to those CNN exit polls, anyway, Trump gained ground among both white and black women in 2020. White women were a lower percentage of the total votes in 2020, however, whereas black women were a higher percentage of the total.

There were fewer married women who voted as a percentage of overall voters in 2020, and they swung to Trump by 6%. The percentage of unmarried women comprising the total votes was about the same, and they swung to Trump by 4%.

CNN supposedly took into account early and mail-voting with their percentages, by the way.
Exit polls are surveys of a random sample of voters taken as they leave their polling place on election day. Absentee and early voters are represented by either telephone polls or in-person exit polls at early voting locations.

It might mostly be a reflection of less excitement to vote for a man than a woman for President.

What do the numbers look like when you factor in level of education? I remember the numbers in 2016 but also that college educated white women broke for Clinton. I suspect the same is true here, plus more non-college educated white women may have been motivated to turn out for Trump in 2020 given the state of things.

In the lead up to the election, so late summer/fall 2020, remember how often Trump and other Republicans used the phrase "urban unrest?" How about "defund the police?" They also focused on school closures in the 2020-21 school year. All of it was designed to scare moderate(ish) white women into voting for Trump.

But the coup de grace was Trump's focus on what "liberals" were trying to do to suburbs. ALL of it was horseshit. This was not a broad, national message. It was highly targeted and was actually the backbone of his entire 2020 campaign. I work in housing and I can't tell you exactly how much money they spent on social media targeting with that message, (it was well into the nine-figure range, seriously), but we were constantly fighting that messaging as it was EVERYWHERE.

That was his strategy: Terrorize people with lies and hope enough vote for him. It worked to a degree, but ultimately, it failed....just like his presidency.
