Figures was not home at the time of the shooting around 5 a.m. Thursday and has not commented on the incident.

(3,156 posts)...this is only going to escalate. The people we're dealing with here are insane.
Jedi Guy
(3,185 posts)Insanity means that you're unable to tell right from wrong, at least in the legal sense. These people think they're on the side of the angels and are fighting against evil. That is far and away more dangerous. When one views a conflict as a struggle between good and evil, well... damn near anything is justified when struggling against evil, no?
Initech
(100,059 posts)They have people constantly feeding them the wrong information - whether it's Joe Rogan going on an anti-vaccine tirade or Alex Jones telling people to storm the capitol or participating in an Ali Alexander "Stop The Steal" rally or Trump telling them that actual news organizations like the Washington Post suck or Tucker Carlson telling people to protest schools who dare teach critical race theory.
When you have that much toxic disinformation being fed to you 24 hours a day, you're unable to tell right from wrong.
Jedi Guy
(3,185 posts)The people we're talking about are able to tell right from wrong, but their definition of "right" is so horribly twisted that they believe they're the good guys. Saying that they're insane is essentially letting them off the hook because "they don't know any better." Their moral compass has been inverted.

(6,546 posts)I have two siblings that embrace these "truths". I could almost agree with some of their rhetoric if I didn't know where their "truths" were coming from. They are very myopic.

(21,420 posts)they listen to knows that shooting at any person's home is wrong. It's not like there was immediate danger or self-protection involved. Just plain wrong.
The shooter had to know it was wrong. Much as I loathe the turtle and think we'd be better off without him, I would not even dream of firing into his home. It's just plain wrong.
Looks like the intent was to terrorize since the shots were fired at the home and not a person.

(21,420 posts)not sending it. And receive it in the legal system, not by gunshot.

(2,186 posts)They simply want to shoot Democrats or liberals or progressives or anyone that disagrees with them. And they have groups and powerful organizations that tacitly approve and encourage them to do just that. Many of these groups and organizations are not even very tacit anymore. Many are now openly advocating for it.
Right or wrong is just a mere matter of perspective for these people.

(6,164 posts)Good doesn't fire shots into a house.
Evil people will always justify their evil actions one way or another, but seldom acknowledge their evil intent.
Jedi Guy
(3,185 posts)No one wakes up in the morning and says to themselves, "Hm, how can I go about being eeeeeeeevil today?" We're all the heroes/heroines of our own personal stories and our goals are good by definition, because they're our goals. Even the Nazis thought they were the good guys, and look at the horrific atrocities they committed. Josef Mengele was a certified monster, but he thought he was advancing medical knowledge with his "research."

These renegade misfits will do damage, but out themselves in the process. Prisons may find themselves full of them.

(31,109 posts)but HAVING SAID ALL THAT
I have been encouraging my liberal/progressive friends for 5 years now to buy guns.
I watched people REPEATEDLY say shit like "I WILL HOLD MY NOSE TO VOTE FOR HILLARY" or vote 3rd party.
Those people convinced enough others that were on the fence NOT to vote or vote 3rd party and here we are.
And where we are is HELL on earth.
And these trumpers ARE going to do much violence and at the end of the day many of us will not be able to rely on police or the government. Although, GLOBAL WARMING is gonna take a bunch of us out tHiS SUMMER so I may not even live long enough for them to shoot at me.
I am waiting for the HILLARY BASHERS to apologize, so far NOT ONE has.

(3,185 posts)It'll probably first be within the jurisdiction of the Alabama State Police, at least at first. They'll probably whistle up the feds, though, if only for the muscle they bring to the table. I may be wrong, though.

(61,692 posts)the Texas Rangers would investigate, I think. Georgia has GBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

We are all over the world protecting our democracy and FreeDumb, but allow this shit to metastasize right here in our face. Prompted by Fox et al out on the open shouting to take up arms against our nation.

But, without more info, it is too doon to draw conclusions, I guess, even though it appears to be obvious what is going on.

But don't be surprised if other factors come to light.
State Sen. Figures has three sons. One is very high achieving, works in the offices of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. Another played basketball at Morehouse College. Sadly, the third has been in trouble most of his life. Some of it is reflected in this news story from 2018.

While I don't rule out any possibility for the cause of this, State Sen. Figures isn't controversial or especially polarizing. I don't know of any reason, off the bat, she would be singled out when there are more outspoken local Black politicos in the community who regularly raise the ire of white Mobilians.
I can't help wondering if the bad seed son has anything to do with this.
