(10,429 posts)If we can't vote, have our votes count, and be assured the result will stand, we'll never be able to do anything about any other issue again.
And time is quickly running out.
Your Vote = Your Voice. They know that & they want to silence us.

(95,245 posts)Voting rights is an essential element to doing this, but the end ought not be lost sight of.
A traitorous cabal has far too strong a presence in government and society, and will destroy the country if allowed any further run.

(58,785 posts)with treason, voting part of that. But yes.

(32,080 posts)it should also include Racial Equality and Justice. It hasn't always, but in an ideal world, they all fall under the same umbrella.

(10,429 posts)and voting is the first step in that preservation, in order to be able to take the next steps.

(7,911 posts)Once the climate goes to shit, human civilization is doomed and nothing else will matter except for raw survival as small bands of humans move north to avoid heat death, thirst, and starvation.
Climate supports life. Nothing else really makes much difference until that issue is addressed (if it's even possible to address it at this late date.)

(23,926 posts)nothing will ever be done to address the growing climate crisis.
Binkie The Clown
(7,911 posts)In truth, there's not a single government anywhere in the world that is taking this crisis seriously enough.
11 Bravo
(23,926 posts)I responded according to that framing.
(And I agree that NO government is currently treating the climate crisis with the urgency it demands.)

(22,756 posts)even though voting rights seems high on the list... if the voting population doesn't have critical thinking skills and awareness of the truth... the vote is still a problem
Bettie
(16,092 posts)a way that works for people who aren't excessively wealthy if there are no voting rights.
They are being chipped away.
And the funny thing is, as a white woman in a small, red town, I don't really have to worry about losing my right to vote, but that's not the point at all. EVERYONE who legally can should be able to vote, easily and without barriers.
kentuck
(111,079 posts)...but it wasn't counted? If you don't have a democracy, voting doesn't mean very much.
Bettie
(16,092 posts)I think my mind refuses to accept the idea of them being able to change election results on a whim.
ETA: Preserving Democracy and Voting Rights are tied closely together. Each hinges on the other.

(21,753 posts)While many issues are more urgent, I believe that many of them are rooted in ignorance... Often willful ignorance. But in the end I think we get the most from having a well educated populace.
You can't save something that people don't value. And the only way for people to value democracy, voting rights, the rule of law, etc. is if they are taught to understand why we have them in the first place.

(14,490 posts)If it were not for massive investments in extreme right-wing policy through election contributions, control of public and social media, and funding of right-wing think tanks by corporations and the ultra-wealthy, America's GOP would be just in the margins of history. We would be living in a far more equal and just world.
They fuel the divisiveness of racism and poverty, the distrust of higher education and science, the distrust of government and the soundness of elections and the corruption of our public and social media.
And, they do it with our dollars that truckle up to them via our everyday purchases of goods and services. I feel that knife in my back each day as I read the latest news from around the world.
We've been building this one-way road to hell for many decades as consumerism, selfishness, divisiveness and a sense of individual independence has come to prevail in the public spirit, both in the USA and most other industrialized nations. It's difficult to envision a way to reverse the flood.
Just the opinion of an old, tired and retired country boy.......

Preserving democracy is the end, voting rights is the means-- so I voted for voting rights.
