This is a huge win for Maryland families.
Fortunately, the judge saw Governor Hogans actions for what they were, a political play that would have caused irreparable harm.

(85,986 posts)...I remember the dark days when the state went for Bush twice.
But this isn't one of those states where you can argue that republicans should be given an inch. There are enough Democrats here to rally to win, we just let down when the black, veteran Lieutenant Governor stepped forward at the end of O'Malley's term.

Lawrence J. Hogan Sr., Md. Republican who called for Nixons impeachment, dies at 88.
'Lawrence J. Hogan Sr., a combative Maryland political figure who rose to national prominence in 1974 by being the first Republican member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to call for President Richard M. Nixons impeachment, died April 20 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. He was 88.
His son, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan Jr. (R), announced the death. A spokesman for the governor said the elder Mr. Hogan died of complications from a stroke.
A onetime FBI agent, Mr. Hogan projected an image as a scrappy politician and conservative stalwart as a three-term congressman in the 1960s and 1970s and later as Prince Georges county executive.
Nevertheless, he possessed an independent streak, most visibly when he put his political future at risk by turning against a president from his own party during the Watergate scandal.'>>>

Hogan can't stop trying to curry favor with his republican base, which, at this point, is nothing more than a collection of lies, distortions, and evasions. That's not just some rhetorical slam, it's infuriatingly the complete truth of republicans.
Sure, Hogan was reasonably sane with the epidemic. He didn't make any moves to deny, minimize, or shortcut the state's response... until he opened the beaches ahead of the CDC guidelines which sparked a new surge of infections and deaths in our state. And don't get me started on the fake Covid test buy.
Here Hogan's very defenses in court are republican demagoguery about UI threatening the state's economy and that beneficiaries need to be coerced to go back to work by taking the money away that President Biden allocated. The movement among republican governors to deny these benefits, to end them two months or more early is nothing more than an attempt to stick it to Democrats who allocated the funds, to stick it to Pres. Biden and our Democratic legislators.
That's essentially what Hogan is bringing to court - this pack of republican lies about UI discouraging people from accepting work that will support them. Nothing else, except an ancillary complaint that the $1.6 billion he wants to leave on the table would 'hurt Md.'s economy' if he allowed it to run its intended course.
That's not a 'mistake,' it's political sophistry designed to thwart Democrats at the expense of Maryland unemployed.
