Man arrested for attempting to ram Washington Monument

A man is in custody after driving his car into the barrier wall encircling the Washington Monument Saturday night.

The collision happened around 8 p.m. Saturday.

D.C. Police said the man’s SUV mounted the curb, drove through the Washington Monument grounds and came within 500 feet of the marble obelisk before crashing into the surrounding stone wall.

. . .

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in custody.

The FBI is investigating the crash as a possible act of terrorism.

DHS warned a couple of days ago of possible "militia" groups converging on DC for the Fourth, likely violence.

(I'll be with my daughter, son in law, grand son and daughter and their friends tomorrow, 60 miles south of DC in southern MD tomorrow, and 'praying,' tho I don't do that.)

if he succeeded in knocking it over? Stand a pencil on end and flick it on the bottom end…there’d be nuthin’ left but mashed taters.

My older brother (eight years senior almost exactly) made me and my other brother climb the steps to the top. It was quite a trek for me at the time and I was too young to really appreciate the uniqueness of the experience…I was angry my brother made me do it and I took the elevator down with the rest of the family.

.

Now you can tell others, "Yeah, I walked up that effing thing!"

The trips I took my kids, just 10 years ago, around your age and older, have just faint memories of it.

Just being at the top and looking out the tiny windows. More memorable to them was scheduling the passes.

Unfortunately, my cousin & I were scheduled almost 2 hours apart. So, I was back down for 100 minutes before he even left.
He made it without stopping, but just barely. It's only about a 300 yard run but took almost 4 minutes to do it.
I don't think they do that run anymore.

he could plow through a concrete barrier wall AND then knock over a concrete monument with an SUV?

The SUV's IQ is higher than the driver's.

I can imagine he had visions of it buckling and then falling over and it would be all over the news and he would be some kind of iconic hero for the "cause". In the land of the stupid he would be their king!
