James Clyburn says he's 'absolutely' open to voter ID requirement

James Clyburn, a member of House Democratic leadership, said Sunday he was "absolutely" open to West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin's proposed changes to election law reform that includes a voter ID requirement -- as long as its equitable.

"We are always for voter ID. We are never for disproportionate voter ID. When you tell me that you got to have a photo ID and a photo for a student activity card is not good but for a hunting license it is good," Clyburn, the House majority whip, told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." I don't know of a single person who is against ID'ing themselves when they go to vote. But we don't want you to tell me my ID is no good because I don't own a gun and I don't go hunting."

The comments from the South Carolina Democrat, who has previously criticized voter ID requirements as a form of voter suppression, comes days after the Supreme Court ruled two provisions of an Arizona voting law that restrict how ballots can be cast do not violate the Voting Rights Act. After Senate Republicans blocked a path forward on an elections reform bill and as GOP-led state legislatures move to enact restrictive voting laws, Democrat lawmakers are also calling for action, including ending the filibuster.

While some moderate Democrats, including Manchin, have called for a bipartisan effort on voting rights reform and not to gut the filibuster, Clyburn told Bash that "we need to get rid of the filibuster for constitutional issues just as we have done for budget issues."

When 70% of the country who can vote, actually vote, Voter ID can go

But make it simple
every state same rules
Photo ID of any kind (School iD, Buss pass, id card, drivers license, chucky cheese card)
A piece of mail with your address on it
Period !

It was easy!
State of Virginia.

On the ballot envelope: name, address, dob.
For photo ID: Virginia driver’s license number.

And with that they had my photo and my signature to match to the envelope!

In NC, the “acceptable” ID’s were the ones used by most Republicans.
By blocking “other” forms of ID, 300,000 Democratic voters could not vote.

That came out in the 4th District Federal court case that said the voter ID restrictions set up by NC REPUBLICANS was done with “surgical precision”!!!!

If everyone had the right to easily get a national ID for free, all of this voter ID stuff would go out the window. Here it is 2021, and we're still using lists of "acceptable ID" for identity proof. That's just asking for rotten little shenanigans to be played by Republicans concerning what is acceptable as Clyburn points out.

It should be simple. If you have a Real ID or passport, you go to the Post Office. They snap your photo, take your fingerprint, and do a retinal scan. You walk out with your National ID smart card. Done. Use it anywhere, including voting. How would the Republicans deny access to people with hard credentials like that?

For those who don't already have highly trustworthy credentials, they should be entitled to caseworker assistance at no charge (and with minimal effort on their parts) to help them verify their identities for the purposes of getting their National IDs.

Yes, there's an up front cost, but it only needs to be done once. Once you have your National ID, you don't need your SS cards, driver's licenses, etc. They can all be stored on the National ID. If you lose the ID, it can't be used, because your biometric info (or pin or both) makes it impossible for others to use. You can get a duplicate just by going to the Post Office and scanning your biometrics and showing your face.

The problem is when the only acceptable IDs are difficult for some people to obtain.
