We have a local garden center that every year leases land from a farmer on a high traffic corner to plant a big field of sunflowers. Public service and good advertising too. It had gone on for decades. Most everyone assumed the garden center owned the land.
Well as soon as the sunflowers came down last year, a 14' by 25' sign went up supporting DJT. The backlash was immediate and severe. The garden center was buried in calls and emails. Landscaping contracts were not renewed or cancelled. Even other businesses who's owners might be supporting DJT did not want to be associated with a business who openly did.
So the garden center owners had to get out into public they don't own that land. Never did. It saved some of their business, but not all.
A few weeks ago it was announced the sunflower field will be no more. The garden center claimed it was the farmer who decided he wanted to farm that land this year ... except we are all driving by it every day seeing weeds ... and more than a few stray sunflowers finding a way skyward. It turns out the garden center chose not to resign the contract. It cost the farmer about $14000. For a small local farmer, that's a hit.
Serves him right...

(6,679 posts)The whole community lost something really special because a farmer thought his cult hero was more important than anything else on the planet.
My mother used to say it takes a whole family to make a happy home but it only takes one to make it unhappy. My mother was not overall a wise or good person, but she was certainly correct on that score.

(10,649 posts)everything. It's dumb. Just assume they'll be a segment of the population that doesn't support you candidate. Why ruin a field of flowers with a large sign?

Every spring, I drive past that place and go to another store for my plants.
Yes, I hold a grudge. They don't even fly it anymore, but I remember. And in 2020, they had a Trump sign. yes, they have every right to support a candidate, and I have every right to boycott them.

(3,665 posts)when they opened a cafe 1/2 block from us. The first time I went in, I noticed they had a shrine for Reagan in the corner. Never went back. They also decided to have political signs in front. Dumb. I'm sure they lost other business.
