(11,767 posts)Those amazing pink Glads with the yellow centers are Priscilla Glads, I grow them and they are spectacular! I have one first prize for them at our county fair,. I grow all the Daylily pictured, plus some Asians, Easter and started my first Gloriosa lily this year! I don't grow the Alstroemeria- Peruvian lily, but I love them and buy them when I do arrangements. Great long-lasting flower if fresh stock. My Hydrangea this year is coming out a dusty pink... We've been hit so hard by the high temps, poor baby's guard leaves burnt. However, my Crocosmia (Lucifer) is thriving, and so the hummingbirds are very happy!
Lovely to see another flower addict! Thank you So much for posting these lovely photos! I truly love flowers. Every sense is satisfied- smell, sight, touch, taste, texture... Flowers and plants for me give me a high that nothing else does. Have a wonder time!

(12,463 posts)On the way to photo the flags. I just HAD to get a pic of them.
They are stunning indeed.
Growing up my parents had a flower encrusted yard with a big garden of vegetables and a lot of fruit trees and bushes too, like blackberries,
cherries, strawberry patch, concord and white grapes, peaches, and more our backyard every summer became a feast for all the senses literally.
We had huge japanese weeping cherry trees in our front yard with japanese maples,we had wisteria and Mimosa trees. Dog flower trees,Hemlocks,
maples..
Poppies, irises, tiger lilies, day lillies ,zinnias, snapdragons ,one was green snap dragons that were just insane beautiful,
tulips,lilacs,
gladiolas
sunflowers, huge neon pink azaleas lining the driveway, four o'clocks by the porch with catnip and peppermint.
Our yard growing up was like a paradise.
My favorite apple tree was one my father grafted.
One half was golden delicious the other red delicious. when the apples got ripe the split tree looked cool.
My sister is carrying on the tradition. She has bird and Humming bird feeders up too.
Her house is beautiful.

(11,767 posts)I have a monster wisteria arbor, star jasmine arbor, hosta, scabiosa, phlox, clematis trellis, tomato pots, potatoes, sunflower, you name it. I've turned our little area into a tropical oasis. Had it not been for the constant 100+ degree weather we've been having, my plants and flowers would be at their prime right now. However, I have some plants that look like they're being incinerated- my hostas are being burnt to literal crisps and so were my fuschia. They're all burnt white and crumble in my hands. Absolutely heartbreaking what the heat has done to my gardens this year. Some of my ferns are even burned, that has never happened before. It's all very distressing.

(1,685 posts)And the junebugs just feast on it. I know that Sevin works on them but it seems to be a nasty chemical. Any suggestions for getting rid of junebugs?
I_UndergroundPanther
(12,463 posts)Never had June bugs on our weeping cherries.
Find out if junebug traps exist and Hang them on the tree branches?

(11,949 posts)Eventually the lack of cool nights/heat/humidity did them in. They last forever especially if cut out of your garden.
MerryBlooms
(11,767 posts)Wonder if they'd do ok in southern Oregon. I'm tempted to do an experiment in a large container after hearing your experience...
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)We actually had ours in the ground. This has been 25 years ago. They did well for a few years. Then a really wet summer did them in. Our gardening season in Central Florida is October through April.
My wife worked in a florist shop thru high school and college. She won the state fair blue ribbon for flower design in high school. Majored in Horticulture. We grow flowers mainly for her to cut and make displays in the house and her office at work. And because we like them. And not just flowers. We grow lots of herbs I cook with. But she uses the basil, Rosemary, Bay Tree and others as greenery in her arrangements.
Shes pretty special.

(12,377 posts)But I have found that people only really want to read T-shirts or signs that are very short and simple, as in
You Suck, or
I Love Coffee. Beyond that they stop reading. I always get lots of comments on my shirt that says, Bad Example.
In other words, keep it short and sweet.
P.S. Your flowers are gorgeous.

(11,949 posts)This must be in the upper south or lower Midwest? The Crepe Myrtle threw me off combined with all the other things hard to grow in the Deep South. The shrubs in front of the sign look like bloomed out Azaleas.
In the early 80s there was a breeding program by the National Arboretum to breed Crepes that can take more cold. Now they can live into Ohio.
Im a big somewhat manly guy. Boots, pick up and all. I love flowers and I think people who dont are dead inside.
The sign is badass as well.

(12,463 posts)We live in Maryland. It's suprising the variety of plants that can grow out here
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Around the world places like Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and such are the sweet spots for humans. Temperate enough you can grow almost anything. You can grow corn, wheat, barley and rye. All row crops.
Id imagine you can keep cold weather vegetables alive till November. Things like collards and cabbage that can take a freeze. Actually taste better after a freeze.
I love Florida but sometimes I miss serious gardening in the summer. I can name on maybe one hand the things I can grow in summer. That I care to grow anyway. By mid-may tomatoes are out of the question.
Right now we have nothing but herbs and peppers. Vegetable wise. I can grow okra, but except in gumbo the wife does not like it.
Have a nice week.

(14,490 posts)Gives me the gumption to work more on my little flower and shrub garden which was neglected during my traveling years.
Takes me back a bit to my roots, where as a child my dear green-thumbed Mother had flowers everywhere and fixed flower arrangements each Sunday for our church.
Please send our complements to your wonderful Sis.

Love em!!!
And it looks like echinaceas in the too two shots? The centers seem almost like pin cushions. But I remember when we went to a local nursery right after it opened on a cloudy morning. Went to look at their echinaceas and on every one, there was a bee either still sleeping on that prickly middle tuft, or just waking up!
I_UndergroundPanther
(12,463 posts)On my sister's echinaceas bumble bees were flying around them. Waited to try to get a photo of one of the bees on a flower..but nope, flew to another flower before I could capture it.
