First Lady Martine Moïse was shot during the attack and is hospitalized, interim Premier Claude Joseph said.
Haitian news outlets reported that a group of people, some of whom spoke in Spanish, stormed the home around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Its economic, political and social woes have deepened, with gang violence spiking heavily in the capital of Port-au-Prince, inflation spiraling and food and fuel becoming scarcer at times in a country where 60% of the population makes less than $2 a day.
These troubles come as Haiti still tries to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew that struck in 2016.

Mr Joseph said that "all measures had been taken to guarantee the continuity of the state".
He has now taken control of the impoverished Caribbean nation, and has urged the public to remain calm.

(58,785 posts)A week or so ago the United States "condemned what it described as a systematic violation of human rights, fundamental freedoms and attacks on the press in Haiti, urging the government to counter a proliferation of gangs and violence." Reportedly our embassy is closed today.
Those poor people. Haitians need a break, one that sticks, and I hope we somehow help them make it happen.

He wanted to be a dictator. I live next door and as far as I can tell, this was not a bad thin, god forgive me.
The last thing Haitians needed was another dictator.

(16,903 posts)Dominican Republic will be secured tightly. These tragedies just make immigration explode, and these poor folks can never catch a break.
I remember reading once about bus loads of Haitians having been imported to DR to work on construction of a high rise, with promise of pay after completion. Once completed, they were put in buses going back to Haiti. Never got paid. 😩

Weve made it our business to try to improve conditions around the world, in many countries. And yet Haiti is our neighbor, but we arent compelled to improve conditions there. Is it that they dont have valuable natural resources to protect?

And by the way, the US has rarely tries to make conditions right - the US, like the rest of world powers, secures its interests. Both Papa Doc and baby Doc were US backed dictators.
