Well spoken and on point. Jolly added that the GOP that celebrates Trump would continue to be anti-republican, anti-democratic until someone wrests control of the party from the former president.

Former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) on Tuesday rejected the idea that theres currently a fight for the soul of the party between moderate Republicans and sycophants of ex-President Donald Trump.
There is nothing left of this Republican Party other than a party thats able to embrace and to elevate an undemocratic, anti-republic theme that somehow we can engage in a fraud on the American people as long as it supports our guy winning an election, Jolly told MSNBCs Nicolle Wallace during a discussion about GOP support of Trumps election lies.

Trump is a symptom. (A large part of) our electorate is the disease.

(9,223 posts)Could not disagree more. There would not have been a Jan 6 Insurrection without Trump, any more than there would have been a October Revolution without Lenin, or a Third Reich without Hitler.
The GOP is a totalitarian organization. The Leader, not the voters, controls the Party. It is the Führer Principle - the Party - the State - the People are instruments of The Leader's will. That is TFG's contribution to history - that one party represents an existential threat to the Republic.

(109 posts)If Reagan or one of the Bushes had spewed as much nonsense as Trump and projected what they perceive as strength then the Republican base would have followed them as well.

(9,223 posts)If Reagan, or the Bushes were different people, maybe they could have pulled off an insurrection. I doubt it.
The rallies, the cult of personality, the biggest lie - (however absurd) the leader is (always) right, and reality can be bent to his will (hurricane and the sharpie), TFG is the classic totalitarian. He purged his party, silenced dissent and went about assembling the black shirts.
He changed things. He is not a symptom.

(14,560 posts)Focusing strictly on 45 gives the entire republican/conservative machine an out.
As you noted, 1/3 of our country has willingly allowed themselves to be programmed to believe in the evil liberal boogyman and that they are the bestest of patriots and christians, and as such ANYTHING is justfied in the holy war again us.
45 didn't make this, he just took the whip from the "traditional" politicians to feed their brainwashed masses a much more pure form of red meat.
There are M A N Y others more than willing to follow his lead now, and the party is nearly devoid of any "traditional" politicians who try to pull it back.
