Inbox: The Lincoln Project, a PAC formed by Republicans to defeat Donald Trump, is now buying ads against companies that donated to Republicans who voted not to certify the 2020 election in Jan.
Their first target is Toyota.

(64,951 posts)I'm guessing that they figured people would forget about their pledge, and nobody was watching.
PR wouldn't have cleared these donations, otherwise.
Now, they find we do remember & somebody's watching.
Negative gets attached to the brand.
PR & Marketing are going ballistic right now. Negative image over $55,000? Heads will roll.
I think it will stick at Toyota, for some time.

(57,073 posts)Imo, to make any difference in perception.

(64,951 posts)The statement doesn't say no donations. Just none to the seditionists.
And, since they took a brand hit over the price of a Lexus, they need to spend 2 Lexus to "untarnish".
Causing the company any amount of trouble over $55k is going to get some director fired.

(17,982 posts)Always gave them tax breaks that American companies did not get, hurting them badly.
For those not old enough to remember Japan announced they could not beat us in the war, they would destroy us economically.
We bought their junk after the war ad then treated them better than our own.
Many forgot,I havent. Bravo to The Lincoln Project!
ancianita
(36,009 posts)but never heard the second about their announcing they'd beat us economically. Is there any source or link for this? I've looked and can't find anything about that stance. I'm just curious, is all.

(17,982 posts)You would really have to understand the feelings of those who came back from the fighting.
Some of my older friends were Paratroopers there.
One of my friends who came here to teach praised the Soldiers who saved them in the Philippines. They were on their knees ready to be shot.
Believe me or not, it does not matter.. I lived through it.

(64,951 posts)They give to dems, too. Like lots of corporations, they spread money to both parties. I don't know the ratio, but it's nothing close to 100% R.
Also, Japan has not beaten us economically. Their GDP per capita is $40,250. The US number is $65,300.
Their economy is nearly twice as dependent on US business relations than the other way.
Someone may have said that at one point, but:
~ It's been 76 years since the war ended & they're not close.
~ I think that we heard that more as a quote from quality gurus showing why Japan was eating the US automakers' & steel producers' lunch in the 70s & 80s.
Lastly, they get tax breaks in Japan, too. Doing business here, and donating to one specific party aren't because of tax break. Especially given they donate to both.

(17,982 posts)Those of us who remember do not agree with you. We watched the favoritism happen!
As I posted before you had to watch it happen. As third generation Auto workers we did.
You proved my point about them being dependent on us. We have taken care of them for 70 years!

(139 posts)And they need to publically disavow their previous donations.

(8,029 posts)I'm so sickened by finding out about their contributions, and their management's SUPPORT of those contributions, that I am truly done with them.

(5,801 posts)Toyota was fully supportive of red don's rollback of mileage and environmental regulations on autos. I think some other auto cos. were basically opposed but Toyota was A-OK with it. Made me decide then and there that I have bought my last Toyota (and I have been a super loyal customer).
So, supporting the seditionists wasn't Toyota's first time at the GQPee rodeo.

(9,958 posts)Comments on the article were interesting, as most commenters vowed never to buy Toyotas again. Its good to see threats of boycotts working to (hopefully) prevent support for the insurrections in Congress.

(2,012 posts)but I will never buy another Toyota. I am so sick and tired of big corps paying no taxes as they help elect people who are destroying our democracy. Woops, my Prius is 16 not 11.

(15,535 posts)Such as naming names. How about naming the members of Congress that they donated to who voted not to certify? My vapid, empty headed rep voted not to certify and she's from a podunk little town in Michigan. In fact, it was her first week on the job and that was her first act as a rep. She should suffer some consequences for that vote, but I haven't heard anything. I'm sure the county Republican Party propped her up with money to run. It didn't come directly from Toyota.

(8,919 posts)I've never cared that much for their cars though. I bought a new car last year and I thought that the Hyundai Santa Fe had a much more attractive interior, so I bought the Hyundai. That may be the last car I ever buy so I doubt I will ever have a need to do business with Toyota anyway.
