Rather than swim through water potentially contaminated with all sorts of street dirt, toxins, rat turds, and stray high-voltage flows?

7. When I lived on the Upper West Side (West 88th/B-Way), our station used to get like that

after a really bad storm. Of course they block it off and close it down. The water would be running down the stairs like a waterfall.

But then you were stuck with the options of either a bus or a taxi along with everyone else who now was not taking the subway, so it would just be a nightmare, especially if you worked way downtown. You could walk and I often did, but it just takes a long time.
