Google why Coloradans hate California and you'll see what I mean. I'm a Coloradan and don't get it, but there it is.

Here's a snip from the rooster.com:

Next, show us a Californian who isn’t the biggest burrito snob on earth. Californians are the first to complain about every other state’s Hispanic food choices. The best burrito, taco food truck in the entire state of Colorado would elicit the most blasé “I mean, it’s like alright or whatever” response from a transplant Californian. First of all shut the hell up, secondly, french fries have no business being inside of a burrito unless you’re an invalid or six. And California doesn't even have green chili. Yeah, they have green salsa but it's not green chili and therefore we're considering all their burrito arguments null and void.

the country and the world. The latest exodus shows that lower to middle income people have left due to the cost of living while wealthier more educated are moving in.

In my experience native Californians are the most grounded people, they watch people come and go but are well established so they are warm and friendly. Some of the people who move here will turn around in a year and go back home. The rest move for various reasons. It's like New York or any big metropolis.
The mass exodus' are usually after a big earthquake, big fires or basically some big event. The problem that it creates is that people don't invest in each other and establishing yourself is harder due to people drifting in... then out of state. LA is notoriously hard to make committed friendships that last.

Here a simple table with two columns would clearly convey the information. Those in the entry in the first column hate those in the entry in the second column.

Simple and clear.

The use of a color-coded map renders it useless for colorblind people.

Even for people with standard color vision, the graphics make it a pain to search and move back and forth from map to color to corresponding color to hated state name.

Worse, you basically have to know the states from their place on the map because they're not labeled. Granted, everyone should be able to identify all 50 states. Standard 8th grade stuff. But in reality, not everyone can, at least not 100%.

Edited to add: Now that I think about it, Wisconsin's state nickname is based on an animal*, which doesn't say anything about the state's scenic beauty, which really is outstanding, imo.

I think I can say with a fair degree of confidence that it's not necessarily people from Massachusetts that Mainers (especially rural Yankees) dislike per se, but anyone "from away". In other words, the whole world.

Such petty provincialism is one of the hallmarks of my home state. It's tough to explain to someone from a normal state that's actually plugged into the rest of humanity. Mainers are, after all, generally a people who prize above all else a person's ability to "keep oneself to oneself".

Maybe if I went instate more I would notice it. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking? My sister lives in Kennebunk, so not very far up. I have been up much further on the coast, but I haven't really been inland.

Or, I should say, whatever it is that passes for cosmopolitan in Maine. You should try venturing into the hinterland a bit more.

Yeah, I didn't mean to characterize it as an openly hostile, pitchforks-and-torches kind of provincialism. That's too dramatic for small town Mainers. It comes more in the form of suspicious glances flashed at the local gas station or market.

I'm the scion of one of Lovecraft's "gently bred" families, my mother was a Waite; while growing up, that side of the family definitely still had a healthy streak of the isolationism you speak of - not as pronounced as the five years I spent in Skowhegan, but certainly not vestigial either.

Throughout the farther reaches of the area, NW CT/Western Mass/VT/NH, it's not uncommon to this day to find a private, even reclusive pre-Revolutionary family quietly living in the same region they've been in for 300 years. It's not as obvious as up North, enough outsiders have settled down there to effectively hide the old blood, but it's not a Maine thing by any means.
