ABC finally decided to show the Men's final at Wimbledon--6 hours AFTER the match started.
So you don't get to watch it live.
THEN----
They didn't show ANY of the second set and skipped about 5 or 6 games of the third set.
Some of us turned in to watch the match. THE WHOLE MATCH.

(7,715 posts)I remember getting up early as a kid to watch Borg v. Tanner in 1979 live, and getting point by point updates for Borg v. McEnroe in the 1980 4th set 18-16 tiebreak since I was away from a tv but next to a phone, etc. I loved watching it back then.
Am I dating myself?
Today, I can't even be bothered to watch it at all. I learned on the internet that Novak Anti-vaxxer won, which is disappointing. That fellow ain't even in the same league as a role model as Federer or Rafa. Djoker is about as much as I will give him.

(38,549 posts)But I was watching with you. I watched Borg win all 5 of his titles at Wimbledon. I even the watched the final with the insanely long 5th set against McEnroe--and no, the network did NOT cut the match short to put something else on instead.

(1,285 posts)so that would be a no.
ESPN has the rights to Wimby and has had them for years. The just reupped for like more 20 years. They still have Breakfast at Wimbledon on ESPN.
ps - you didnt miss much. First set was good and then bleugh as Djoker won the next 3. It was NID even before the match who would win.

(7,715 posts)They were both wonderful. Dick: straightforward and Bud: very colorful commentary. But together they were a fabulous pair.
Thanks so much for the match description. I will confess that I am so far removed from tennis these days, that I didn't know who the finalists were. If it's not Rafa, I'm generally not interested.
I do love it when Johnny Mac does the commentary. He is an incredibly intelligent acerbic. commentator. When we lived overseas, we used to watch it live on the BBC (I think), which was a special treat. I tried to go a couple of times to Wimbledon but didn't.
I guess all generations say this, but it's not the same without folks like Borg, Connors, and McEnroe. To me, Federer and Rafa were about the same, and they are two giants, and great people to boot. I can't say same for the Djoker. That's why I don't really care anymore about tennis, personally.
What a comedown that is when I was a kid in the '80s. I remember when McEnroe beat Borg on July 4, 1981 (good heavens, 40 years ago last Sunday!). I was actually a pretty decent tennis player as a kid, and, after Mac's win, I'd dream of winning Wimbledon and coming home to JFK Airport where Julie McCoy/Lauren Tewes from The Love Boat would be there to welcome her Merry Holidays home with open arms! I can dream, can't I!?

(14,075 posts)ESPN and ABC are affiliated - I think they're both owned by Disney.
I do hate the way TV carries sports. But, the affiliation may have something to do with the way ABC put it on.

(38,549 posts)I grew up watching Breakfast at Wimbledon on broadcast TV.
There's a freaking auto race on EVERY Sunday. And lately there's been WNBA on every weekend (including today).
Wimbledon happens once a year.

Its the cheapest way to get ESPN etc.

(38,549 posts)We do not have $50/month for TV.
Hell, I don't even have $10 to renew my star membership here.

(24,396 posts)advantage of the free week of viewing that comes with signing up, then canceled the account today when billing would have kicked in. At worst, you would have had to pay them $50 for a months membership. Unlike cable TV, streaming services do not have yearly or semi-yearly contracts. You can cancel anytime you wish without penalty.

The recording set automatically to start at 8pm (which is the LONDON time it starts-- that is, 3 pm ET).
Frustrating.

(1,285 posts)Streaming on ESPN+ and delayed broadcast on Tennis Channel and I think on TC Plus OnDemand, but both not until after ESPN broadcast is over.

(24,396 posts)I remember watching Edberg at Wimbledon - points lasted 2-3 hits.
Todays game is a baseline game with the occasional serve and volley. Much more entertaining.
