Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties to win the European Championships
Yet again England choke taking penalties, depite the English goalkeeper making two outstanding penalty saves.

(2,133 posts)This would be like after 2 OTs in basketball we end the game on free throws or a one on one game.

(268,724 posts)Penalty kicks are part of this glorious game and they do take place on the field

(2,133 posts)That would be equivalent to ending a football game two on two with a QB and an end. It may be on the field but it is not the game. This is only the 4th time since 1960 that a team came from behind to win. I heard that today and that is pathetic. There is a basic flaw in the game.

(2,133 posts)It to any game. It is not better than any other game. All other games are played to the end playing the game as it is designed. It is the only game that has too design a different end in order to end it.

(5,111 posts)You find it frustrating that soccer is not being played on the field (or some such) but its a different game with different rules billions of people all over the get it.
Casady1
(2,133 posts)to my argument that the game should be won playing the game. Just because people accept it as the way to end the game doesnt make my argument wrong. Let me ask you this, is a 0-0 game something that should happen on a regular basis?

But I do agree for a championship it shouldnt have a separate set of rules to end the game. But those are the rules. So thats the way it ends.

(2,133 posts)There are comebacks all the time in every other sport. When a team gets ahead in soccer there are very few comebacks. A 0-0 game or as they say nil to nil is not all that uncommon. Do you think a 0-0 game is good?
muriel_volestrangler
(101,271 posts)Whether it's good all depends on the qualify of play in it.

(2,133 posts)I watched this game and it was pretty boring. When you pack 5 into the scoring area on defense it becomes almost impossible to score. When you have 4 comebacks in 60 years then fundamentally something is wrong in the design. Think of comebacks in football, basketball and baseball. It is some of the most exciting games we have ever watched. Think of game 6 n the 75 series with Bernie Carbo hit the 3 run hr in the bottom of the 8th and Fisk hitting the hr in the 12th. The game was won on the field.
rurallib
(62,387 posts)in the middle and open the game up. Perhaps soccer could come up with something similar. But to me that would ruin the game. Pretty soon you'd have that abomination they tried in the US many years back that resembled a pin ball game.
Besides, Soccer is by far the most popular sport in the World. Most of their fans are not complaining about the rule AFAIK
Casady1
(2,133 posts)has not been great. As my friends father said who was a college coach where is the 4 point line? Now we see centers(Yannis)shooting 3 pointers and it is brutal. Imagine if we had 9 points for a 50 yard touchdown pass. That would fundamentally change the game. Im a believer that a score is a score. I also dont care what others think I approach it from a theoretical and philosophical approach. Phoenix is playing old school BB and they are fun to watch.

(268,724 posts)Sorry. Penalty kicks are part of the game - they require great skill under pressure. I remember when the US was hosting the WC back in 1994 and some idiots wanted the game to move to four quarters so they could sell more ads. We simply said NO.
Same here.
Casady1
(2,133 posts)because they havent figured out how to end the game playing the actual game. This sport has games that end 0-0 .

DON'T WATCH IT.
if you think a sport is boring that is fine. There is no rule everyone has to like everything.
I cannot think of a single baseball game I would call exciting. I'm not going to preach things I believe are flaws in the game and what should be done to make it more exciting. If you have three hours to spend to watch about fifteen minutes of action and that is fun- have at it.

(39,351 posts)Teams played more to win in extra time IMHO.
Failing that, kicks are the only way to end it. Ive seen dozens of these endings, and its funny how the best team almost always wins anyway. Today being the latest case in point.
