CNN)The Rev. Al Sharpton and Ben Crump are taking up their first case involving a White person who was killed after being shot during an encounter with a police officer.
The civil rights leader and the high-profile attorney, who Sharpton has dubbed "Black America's Attorney general," deemed the police shooting of 17-year-old Hunter Brittain "one of the most significant" cases in the fight to push Congress for landmark police reform legislation.

In his eulogy, Sharpton said, "The issue of policing is not about Black and White. It's about right and wrong."
Sharpton said this was the first time in his nearly 40-year career advocating for civil rights that he was invited to present the eulogy for a White person who was a victim of police brutality.

"I think it may have been (300) or 400 people there, maybe 20 Black, and for them to give me five or six standing ovations showed that this is a real possibility of us bridging, a real police accountability movement that is based on race, and class," Sharpton said, adding, "As I said in the eulogy, that if Hunter had been a rich guy in another part of the White community, would they have shot him like that?"

(4,741 posts)Choice quote: "Nothing comes of this. He is white. No one cares (in power, media, academia, govt, charities, etc) Have they provided the name of the shooter of Ashli Babbit? Have Republicans blurted a word?" Howling, gnashing of teeth, "Where's Al Sharpton now, huh?"
But, as soon as Sharpton actually did show up...crickets. Nary a word about Hunter over there since June 30th. Curious, that.

(56,828 posts)these same freepers would have been cheering the cop for "standing his ground" when he shot her.
The truth is, Ashli Babbitt was a domestic terrorist.

(4,741 posts)A fresh turd just dropped over there a couple of hours ago announcing Sharpton's involvement, quotes incoming:
"Translation: Our ability to use minorities to defund the police are getting unpopular. We now have to use whites if we want to create anarchy so we can be the solution."
"When you hear Al Sharpton is involved, you know its an attempt at a dollar shake down. Same as hearing the infamous Gloria Allred being involved in a #MeToo case. Something crooked this way comes!"
"Having Sharpton on my side would make my skin crawl. Like lice."

(25,923 posts)We miss part of the picture when we ignore injustices that are perpetrated against the so-called working class, instead focusing attention solely on the basis of race. Heres something to expect: unrelenting smears against Al Sharpton and anyone else attempting to form a movement transcending race and class. Powerful forces have strived to create divisions that prevent true cooperation; this will not stand unchallenged.

(3,185 posts)I'd ordinarily suggest waiting for the results of the investigation before forming any strong conclusions. In this instance, though, the deputy was later fired for not turning on his body camera in a timely way, so either the sheriff has no confidence that the shooting was justified or he's making an example of this deputy over the body cam screwup.

(3,764 posts)Those of us who follow the drug war can point to many instances of white people shot (or beat to death)by the police over the years for no good reason.
Many had drugs, were suspected of having drugs or were mentally ill.
Kelly Thomas ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Kelly_Thomas ) and
Donald Scott (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Donald_Scott) come to mind but I can think of other cases where I cant remember their names.
Tom Crosslin and Rolly Rohm (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Farm) at Rainbow Farms.
The Branch Davidians, Ruby Ridge.
There was a guy in a group home in a wheelchair who was shot and killed. The police say he attacked them with a ball point pen. ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/amp/No-charges-against-HPD-officer-who-killed-double-4598518.php )Seriously!!
Lets not forget the more recent shooting in Houston of a couple in a poor neighborhood in Houston https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/01/26/houston-police-indictments/%3foutputType=amp
I know not all of these guys were angels but they didnt need to be killed. Im going to keep adding names to the list as I think of them. Its good that they are expanding the scope of their issue. It makes it more likely that something will be done.
