because the data pulled from these sorts of devices tend to fall into a weird legally gray area, and because Amazon is... Amazon, its worth assuming your sleeping habits will be turned into ad-targeting fodder soon enough.
Amazon Wins Approval to Track Your Sleep With IoT Devices
As you might expect, it's all about piling on more ads.

On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission gave the e-commerce giant clearance to create bedside radar devices meant to track how we toss and turn at night. And while Amazons putting the best face possible on the innovation, its still all about those ad dollars.
Bloomberg was first to notice the agency had quietly filed a memo that authorized the ecommerce giant to develop and deploy an unlicensed radar device meant to track any nearby movement. This was in response to an initial request that Amazon filed with the agency nearly three weeks ago, where the company described its vision for Radar Sensors. These devices, Amazon said, would fire high-frequency radio waves to map out movements from anyone nearby.
And because the FCC is the federal body responsible for policing the airwaves, Amazon was legally obligated to get their go-ahead before they began marketing this yet-to-be-licensed radar device.
By capturing motion in a three-dimensional space, a Radar Sensor can capture data in a manner that enables touchless device control, Amazon wrote. As a result, users can engage with a device and control its features through simple gestures and movements.

(3,607 posts)There are several top devices in the market. Smart Mobiles, smart refrigerators, smart watches, smart fire alarm, smart door lock, smart bicycle, medical sensors, fitness trackers, smart security system etc., are few examples of IoT products.

(90,648 posts)My old one was 8 years old so it was past time to be issued a new one. And this is what I get. They get to track my usage and if I am (seriously) non-compliant, they get to take the machine back.
I get an App which is not working right, probably due to my password but I dont care. And the reason I don't care is they are clearly still tracking my usage. I get emails from them saying I won a silver award, whoop-de-doo, and urging me to log on and fricking tell my friends and relatives of my health-success. Or join a chat group for encouragement.
Do I sound annoyed? Yes, I am annoyed. I am over 70 and have been using a CPAP for 17 years, so this non-human encouragement is both intrusive and stupid. What I want is access to a human to talk about my supply order.
I dont think Apria is owned by Amazon, but that is not the point. The point is I have tried to avoid getting swept up in the Internet of Things, but one by one as appliances wear out, it becomes increasingly unavoidable.
Screw Amazon. My gods.
