I Alone Can Fix It, the new Donald Trump book by Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, quotes Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley repeatedly likening his boss to Adolph Hitler, and recounting his belief that he needed to use his position in the military to prevent a coup.
Trump has released a statement denying the latter. Sort of:
The former president makes three main points in his rejoinder to Milley. First, he calls Milley a terrible hiring choice by Donald Trump, which is a claim Trump has made about many of his hires. In this instance, Trump takes the extra step and explains why he is so bad at hiring people: He only hired Milley because Milley was hated by another terrible Trump hire.
I have never managed a large organization, but I am pretty confident that hiring people to extremely high level positions out of spite is generally not a sound approach to talent acquisition. Its also worth reiterating that hiring quality staff is an extremely important aspect of the presidents job, and Trumps repeated boasts that he does this aspect the the job miserably seems almost like an admission of disqualification.

(90,645 posts)If you recall, TFG brought in large numbers of uniformed troops from wherever he could get them: Bureau of Prisons was a big favorite, and a whole bunch with tactical uniforms and NO insignia. Then his troops over-reacted spectacularly as per his orders, causing injury and damage.
Cant recall all the details now. Gods he is detestable.
I have to say this, though: at least George W. Bush never did that to me and a million others when we marched on Washington against his stupid war. Black helicopters, yes. Tear gas and abuse, no.

(32,080 posts)What a steaming pile of bullshit. Trump's little tirade is so far beyond pathetic, it isn't funny. It will never cease to boggle my mind that this whiny, stupid, petulant ninny was President for even a second, let alone four years.

(101,307 posts)because he was too much of a hawk on Iran:
So it was that, several weeks later, and without warning, Mattis was handed a note telling him he was being replaced. The president hadnt even bothered to call him, one of the reasons the decision set off a mini-firestorm. Mattis defenders stepped up, pointing out that Obama would do well to heed the advice of a commander who was simply warning him about the consequences of sidling up to a country like Iran. Mattis dismissal also fed the resentment of the far right, where Obamas removal of officers (like David Petraeus and Stanley McChrystal) was characterized as a purge. Obamas team, it was claimed, was more concerned with political correctness than with facing down Americas enemies.
Of course, theres the opposing point of view: that Obamas purge of Petraeus, McChrystal and Mattis was the result of their missteps, not his. Petraeus resigned as the result of an affair, made public while he was serving as Obamas CIA director, in which he shared classified information with his girlfriend, while McChrystal was fired for failing to police the inappropriate pronouncements of his alcohol-fueled staff. Mattis, on the other hand, was forced out for what was close to insubordination: that is, while Trump notoriously claimed that Obama reduced the Generals to rubble, they mostly did it themselves. Or perhaps, in the Mattis case, Obama decided to reduce him to rubble because he feared that his Centcom commander wanted to do that to Tehran.

It wasn't Milley at all. But Trump doesn't know what he's talking about, and clearly doesn't have anyone check his rants.
