(3,169 posts)Wrongful death suits?
Complicity in a wrongful death?
The one thing that helped keep (real) news organizations away from that kind of suit was integrity and responsible reporting IMHO. Free-speech be damned when it can kill and is coming from a supposedly reputable organiztion.
I think even the GOP and Senators should be held liable for this. Killing people is NOT part of their congressional mandate.
President Biden may just have given the DOJ the tool it needs to stamp on all of.

(3,169 posts)If Facebook et al are (still) killing people with misinformation, what does that say about tfgs original statement this will miraculously go away ?
He already admitted that it was misinformation.
I think the Presidents opinion should be used to squash the entire GOP misinformation machine In one fell swoop.
Everyone who has lost a relative to COVID should have standing now to bring a wrongful death suit with a very long list of defendants.

(21,341 posts)that debunk some of the specific disinformation being spread about vaccine side effects and supposed dangers. They would have to be honest about some of the negatives, like feeling sick for a short time after the second mRNA shot, but explaining that it's normal and not nearly as bad as getting covid. Explain, too, about J&J in younger women, minor heart inflammation in teens. Factual information about which vaccine is best for age groups, vaccine risks and how easily they are treated is necessary because, in the absence of factual info, people create their own suspicions.
Use well known, trusted public figures and some visuals on how viruses spread and the kind of damage covid does. Maybe a combination of short, repeated messages and longer infomercial type messages.
The extras section on my dvd of the film Contagion has an excellent cartoon type explanation of how viruses spread. The visuals and voice are too fast for many people, but a slower version would be great.

(35,620 posts)Lots of Contagion clips but nothing from the extras section.
Ratz. Sounded like something that would be good.

(21,341 posts)stick figure standing on a globe. As the virus spreads, lines appear that connect the stick figure to other ones across national boundaries, where the lines blossom out within each country and then beyond.
Meantime, a voice explains what is happening, how viruses need hosts to multiply and create mutations. It mentions how businesses and public services shut down in a pandemic and supply chains get disrupted. It ends with advice on sanitation to protect onesself and stop the spread.
It is all done at rapid speed, but if slowed down, is a good educational video.

(21,341 posts)It is part of a set that includes Outbreak. Crazy to watch 2 pandemic films during a pandemic, but I wanted to compare them to real life for accuracy. Contagion is remarkably accurate about public reaction and human nature.
Outbreak is more of an action adventure film, but there is one scene in it that I wish evrryone could see because it illustrates how infectious people spread viruses. An infected guy in a movie theater coughs and the film shows tiny particles of virus floating through the air. They land inside the open mouth of a woman a few rows down who is laughing at the movie. After seeing that illustration, most people would be very eager to wear masks in public.

(3,169 posts)The first season was a pretty good disaster preparedness premise. With all the venal goppers and saboteurs you never expected.

(21,341 posts)3 libraries near me for Contagion.
Outbreak just one.
Going to try to get it tomorrow.
Hah, then I have to figure out to connect my dvd player!
I'll be really interested to see how Contagion is accurate with public reaction.

(21,341 posts)but in real life, it was worse because it was the president.
There are differences, too, but many similarities.
As I watched it, I thought about how, when it was first released, people considered it a scary sci fi movie. Now it's the real thing in real life.
