Derek Chauvin trial cost Hennepin County nearly $4M

The weekslong trial of former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin cost Minnesota's Hennepin County about $3.7 million.

Documents released by the county Friday show the sheriff's office spent about $3.2 million on employee salaries, equipment and security for the courthouse.

After salaries, the single largest expense was for added courthouse security, which cost more than $773,000. The sheriff's office spent $18,000 for a drone to monitor “restricted airspace.”

Costs for the Attorney General's Office and the state courts were not immediately available.

Chauvin was convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd and was sentenced in April to 22 1/2 years in prison.

If you add up the total costs of all the ensuing property damage, security, business closures, etc. etc. etc. None of it would have ever happened if he simply drove George Floyd to the police station instead of kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes.

All because of one person being a racist.

3. Expensive, but murder trials don't come cheap, especially the high-profile ones.

$1 million is not unheard of. Triple that if the death penalty is involved.

Court costs are, in principle, to be paid by the offenders on top of fines and restitution. After that, it fall on the taxpayers.

it's possible that future settlement payouts would be in excess of that amount.

about Chauvin this could have been avoided but just like anything bad he was allowed to fester and here we are.
