https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkbmwy/im-a-frito-lay-factory-worker-i-work-12-hour-days-7-days-a-week?fbclid=IwAR0_3hUICViM_yjMcR2-fdt82hm7YCsyeBcmx-Jkmr0MHKAw4c1QWn0wIlUMany of the 850 workers at the facility say they work 84 hours a week with no days off. Workers are nominally supposed to work eight-hour shifts, but because of shortages, workers are often forced to add on an extra four hours before or after their shifts. Workers call these extended shifts "suicides," because they say the schedule kills you over time. Some workers haven't had a single day off in five months, including Saturdays and Sundays.
The grassy lawn outside the factory has transformed into a picket line, drawing crowds of hundreds of workers and union members from around Kansas. The struggle at Frito-Lay is a reminder that the eight hour workday"eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for what you will"that workers won in bloody labor battles of the late 19th century can no longer be taken for granted.

We would rather nobody buy any Frito-Lay products, Fritos, Doritos, Tostitos, Funyuns, Cheetos, all those, while we're on strike. We make all of those in Topeka, Kansas. We also would rather nobody buys PepsiCo products while we're on the line. PepsiCo is the owner of Frito-Lay.
We're hoping we can get these people back to work with a decent wage and some kind of alternative to all this forced overtime. Honestly, I don't know how what they're doing is legal.

(1,105 posts)I don't.
Stopped when I discovered a direct correlation between eating that ultra processed material (not really food) and my joint pain going up significantly.
Eat a bag of those chips, a day or two later I ache all over. Stop eating it and a couple of days later the inflammation has cleared up.
Easy medicine, just don't eat the cr*p.

(2,220 posts)I do enjoy Lays chips and Fritos occasionally. Ive also noticed the quality of both has taken a sharp nosedive over the past year.

(8,567 posts)Eat or drink any of those things. Personal choice, zero problem with those that do. I wish there was a way to support those that work there. Should not be allowed in this country. Or any for that matter.
For those that voted for trump, and republicans, take your run the country like a business, trump was a great business man up your asses.
GQP are trying to run American a like a business. Only top 1-2 percent take majority of the money, that the people make, pay the people near nothing, deny healthcare, time off, work extra hours to stay alive, fuck your family and children, do not allow any regulations for safety of the people, put zero money back into the company, never upgrade infrastructure even if the machines are falling apart and could kill the people, not let the people have a voice at all about their concerns, if they die, just put in another desperate for any job. Play Fox 24/7 forced into the workers brains, Election Day, or month, tough shit, no time off with pay. I can go on.
How long will that company, or country survive of be profitable for other than top percent? What kind of health or life do those people exist in? How good a job do they do with that atmosphere.
Corporate America, America has become a shitty run corporation, with zero hope of the dream, desperate workers, some going off the deep end with heavy armory, mentally pushed and ready to take out others and themselves out of their misery.
These folks at Pepsi Co and Fredo Lay are experiencing how GQP want America to be governed.
Good luck workers, I will continue to not use that stuff.

I think my wife bought Tostitos once or twice, and I'll tell her to avoid it if she thinks of it again.

(2,147 posts)Read about it this morning. Terrible work conditions. Interesting, the guy interviewed for the article said the factory used to be a great place to work. Something obviously changed at corporate level.

I don't know how they get away with this. There are laws that should prevent this, but I guess huge political donations make some of those laws extremely pliable.
PepsiCo. and Frito-Lay are banned from this household.
