The common medical condition you probably never heard of: POTS (growing due to covid!)

https://www.localmemphis.com/mobile/article/news/health/the-common-medical-condition-you-probably-never-heard-of-pots-long-haulers-covid19-lingering-effects-long-term-symptoms-regional-health-one-post/522-50103c10-0538-4ee5-b2c1-c61bb1012a65

About one to three million Americans have a condition known as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. This number is growing because of COVID-19.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A common condition known as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome or "POTS," is being noticed in a growing number of people who have recovered from COVID-19. Regional One Health Medical Director for Ambulatory Services, Dr. Cyrilyn Walters runs the post- COVID-19 clinic located at Regional One Health Outpatient Center and said nearly 60% of COVID-19 patients are experiencing POTS-like symptoms.

"So, POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and basically what it is when we usually stand, our body responds by speeding up our heart rate a little bit because gravity wants to pull our blood to our legs and so your body has a mechanism to stop that from happening. " Walters said. "So with POTS, rather than having a low blood pressure, when you go from lying to standing, you have an overactive rate problem."

Snip

"You start to feel dizzy and at least for me your blood starts to drop so sometimes you feel like you are about to die because your heart rate is going up and your dizzy and you just have tingly sensations everywhere," Heimann said.

More at link.

I had a teen with lyme & coinfections 20+ years ago who experienced this symptom of the diseases. The symptoms were so severe, standing consistently resulted in complete vision loss, with vision returning gradually in odd chunks.

Extensive research netted the realization that any severe illness can & often does cause an imbalance in the person's hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis ("HPA Axis&quot .

We addressed this with medical practitioners providing neurostructual technique, a gentle massaging of the autonomic nerves in a specific sequence & and treatments with a qigong machine, which emitted the same frequency as qigong master healers' hands when they are working.

So it does not surprise me that long-haulers are experiencing this. Sadly, I don't believe modern medicine (aka a pill) offers resolution to this issue.

My heart goes out to those suffering with this. 💔

I couldn't figure out how POTS could be an acronym for "growing due to COVID".

I was expecting to see that people were actually growing taller, or something.

But, yeah, that would be alarming.

It annoyed the hell out of me because I stuffed my deathly ill kid in my car & went to Mayos for help. Pfffft.

This was the dx! No remedy.

I asked the "expert" neurologist, "How DARE you restate symptoms & call it a diagnosis! Find the cause & fix it!"

Bovine stare.

To avoid confusion for others.

Would "going up" in place of "growing" be clearer?

Ty. Kiddo has been lyme / coinfection free for over 20 years & certainly not because of idiots like that "expert!"

If I had listened to them, kid would be dead or in a wheelchair for life!

At the time, I didn't know lyme & coinfections were the culprits. I didn't know if it was a brain tumor or what. It was truly horrible. 2-3 new docs / day several days / week for 7 months to get a diagnosis! (Typical for lymies!)

We celebrated & commenced erradication of the offending parasites! 🙌

This disease is so new. We have barely scratched the surface of its long-term impact, even on those with mild cases.

Vax-mask-and distance. It's a small price to pay to stay safe from enormous unknowns.

Stress increases cortisol, then if it continues overtime, damages the adrenal glands and then DECREASES it to the point of exhaustion. Low cortisol messes with everything from the krebs cycle to blood pressure, heart rate etc.

Same thing happens from PTSD, the flu, etc.

Triggered by hypothalamus & pituitary. Hence the term HPA axis.

One holistic told us the kid's adrenals were so stressed from the diseases that they were probably shriveled up like raisins. (See above posts.)

Eyelids were dark purple from lack of sleep... 😢

I can try to find if if you want to read it.

I used to research frantically, printing specific credible articles, highlighting pertinent parts & take to dr. appts so docs could flip through voluminous material, read the few petrinent findings & agree to my requested treatment plan.

It's really old. I found article in 2000. Lol

I'll do my best to find for you.

There is a ton of info on the HPA axis syndrome, disruption, etc in google search.

In my experience, MDs know about this, but don't think much about it because they are trained to rx & do surgeries to fix med problems. 😏

I was a generally healthy middle age male who contracted Covid in Jan. I had moderate symptoms (high fever, exhaustion, aches, chills, post nasal sore throat, can I say exhaustion again, I was wiped out for 10 days). I continues to sleep for about 12 plus hours a night for weeks after getting the clean bill of health from the public health Dept, then was down to about 10 hours a night for another month or so. I usually sleep about 7 hours a night.

But the more interesting part of this is that I have had what I thought were a mild anxiety attack, lightness in my chest. I did not know what to attribute it to. When I go to my doc next I will bring this up as a possibility.

Do your research before you go. Highlight pertinent parts for dr.'s ease in reading. (Pls see my above posts.)

If your dr. Is an MD, s/he might opt to rx anti anxiety meds, but be very careful with benzos - highly addictive & withdrawals are 1 of only 2 types of withdrawal that can be fatal (alcohol is the other).
