Conservative says it's time to stop coddling vaccine resisters -- and time to start mandates

In a surprising take, conservative Washington Post columnist Max Boot encouraged states to start mandating that residents take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Writing Monday, Boot said that it's time to stop pleading and start mandating, and he cited data showing that 99 percent of those in the hospital with COVID-19 are unvaccinated as justification to start getting tough.

But Boot didn't only lay the dangers at the feet of red states ballooning with COVID-19 cases. He spread the blame around.

"There is vaccine hesitancy among many different sectors of the population, including reckless youths, granola liberals who believe in alternative medicines and African Americans who distrust the health-care system," he wrote. "Some are still persuadable, but many are not. As I've previously noted, the biggest obstacle to vaccination is now Republicans who are being fed a steady diet of anti-vaxxer propaganda by Fox 'News' Channel, Facebook and other social media, and reckless demagogues such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)."

Enforcing a mandate is impossible

If our overlords are serious they best put away the sticks and drag out a carrot

but certain mandates could be done, even at the Federal level--- for public travel by air, train or bus, for instance...

And certainly at the state level, the covid vaccine should be mandate for public schools-- just like they do for vaccinations of every other major disease which we have since conquered.

There will be an outcry, but lots more folks will get the hint. It really would help if the FDA would give the vaccines full approval. How many tens of millions of tests do you have to run?

it puts the responbilility on the restaurants, theaters, and concert managers to check their customers. People can fake vaccination cards. It would require some kind of vaccination photo ID or phone app.

Vaccine records. No Covid shot? No coverage or coverage at a higher premium. Same for "skinny" (non ACA, short term) health plans and travel insurance. ACA compliant insurance can also do a surcharge for insufficient vaccinations.

Everyone over the age of 12 has had a chance to get vaccinated on the government's dime. By end of 2022, the vaccine should no longer be free. Insurance should only cover the cost of the vaccine for the under 18s for three years before they can cover it for everyone, though for under 18s I believe the government should foot the bill for this vaccine indefinitely and insurance companies get reimbursed.

That might get some people to take it. It does go against my own personal philosophy that healthcare should be provided free at the point of service but this is America...

IMO we've dangled enough carrots. It's time IMO to speak softly and wield a big stick. It has to be big because a lot of sense has to be knocked into these anti vaxxers.

paying for hospitalization, meds, and death benefits for unvaccinated people, that might motivate some to get vaccinated. Free vaccine vs. hefty medical bills.

21. Check Cares Act and HRSA COVID-19 Uninsured Program-- These cover CV19 treatment for non-insured.
"How it works

"Health care providers who have conducted COVID-19 testing or provided treatment for uninsured individuals with a COVID-19 primary diagnosis on or after February 4, 2020 can request claims reimbursement through the program electronically and will be reimbursed generally at Medicare rates, subject to available funding. Providers can also request reimbursement for COVID-19 vaccine administration. Steps will involve: enrolling as a provider participant, checking patient eligibility, submitting patient information, submitting claims, and receiving payment via direct deposit."

"To participate, providers must attest to the following at registration

"You have checked for health care coverage eligibility and confirmed that the patient is uninsured. You have verified that the patient does not have coverage through an individual, or employer-sponsored plan, a federal healthcare program, or the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program at the time services were rendered, and no other payer will reimburse you for COVID-19 vaccination, testing and/or care for that patient.

"You will accept defined program reimbursement as payment in full.

"You agree not to balance bill the patient.

"You agree to program terms and conditions and may be subject to post-reimbursement audit review.

For whom can claims be submitted

Providers may submit claims for individuals in the U.S. without health care coverage.

What's covered

". . . . . . Treatment: office visit (including telehealth), emergency room, inpatient, outpatient/observation, skilled nursing facility, long-term acute care (LTAC), rehabilitation care, home health, durable medical equipment (e.g., oxygen, ventilator), emergency ambulance transportation, non-emergent patient transfers via ambulance, and FDA-licensed, authorized, or approved treatments as they become available for COVID-19 treatment."

For those who will respond, but what if the providers won't participate, the answer is simple. Most uninsured people do not have the means to pay for extensive treatment. So if these providers want to get paid, there really isn't much choice but to accept the payments above.

More than 100,000 people rallied across France on Saturday to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to require a Covid-19 “health pass” to access public places such as cafés and cinemas starting next week. In addition to traditional concerns about curtailed civil liberties, conspiracy theories have fuelled the opposition to making proof of vaccination obligatory.

No question other countries including the U.S. would have large protests over mandates.

we can't make them get vaccinated, but we can make them wish they had. No flying. No entrance to any federal property. No federal security clearances for your job. No student loan guarantees. No commercial driver's license. States can deny occupational licenses. The list goes on.
