There are tons of people here who hate Trump.
Why do people assume Florida is Trump central?

(3,160 posts)Guess it is a mild form of PTSD. I was in Lee County which is red but didn't think it was too red.

(43,173 posts)Normal people don't hold boat parades and truck parades in honor of their leaders or put their names on flags.
Abnormal people do.
There are more normal than abnormal people, but because you notice the abnormal people, you tend to inflate their importance.
Trump never came close to winning the popular vote during either election and never held more than a 49% average polling rating at its very highest.
His general "popularity"--whether it be in Florida or nationwide--is an invention in his own supporters' minds.
Sympthsical
(9,072 posts)The number of totally insane Trumpists is small. But they're so out there, they get a lot of social media play. Their actions get spread around. "Look at these crazy motherf***ers."
I live next to a rural area. Vineyards and farms just down the street. So there are Trump signs around, even though my city is 68% Democratic. A neighbor three houses down had a Trump flag for awhile. Ex-military. But he took it down after the election. I've chatted with him now and then. Seems decent folk. We never broached politics.
I take a walking path to the gym every morning. Just got back, actually. And along this path, in what seems a fairly average suburban area, are chalk messages. All over the path. MAGA and things. Biden's a communist. The usual. It changes all the time, but it's been fairly consistent since I moved here about 18 months ago. You'd think there was some kind of weird cell of Trumpists chalking up the place.
But I can tell by the handwriting it is always just this one person doing it.
I usually have a bottle of water while walking back, and I'll pour it out if I think to now and then. Others seem to do similar. Doesn't matter. The messages always reappear.
At least it's just chalk.

(778 posts)If we were one of the few States who divided up the electoral votes, Biden would have gotten 14 and Trump would have gotten 15.
Hillsborough County, where the team is actually from, went for Biden. I love how the crowd cheered louder when they ripped it down then when they put it up.

(204 posts)At least Marathon, where my parents winter. Marathon is 91% white. Trump boats with flags & banners. Trump carried Monroe County 53%-46% in '20.

(31,261 posts)Tampa has a Gay Mayor (she won office about two years ago).
Trump won Florida because African Americans didnt turn out in force and more radical Cuban voters did (along with Venezuelans, who vote republican due to strong anti communist sentiment).
The Democratic Party of Florida is now lead by a former Mayor of Miami, who is Cuban and highly popular in South Florida. I suspect Trump will have issues in Florida if he tries to run again.

(3,299 posts)I haven't lived or worked in the area for many years, but it used to vote democratic consistently, and the St. Petersburg Times was a liberal newspaper. A lot of this had to do with the minority population near the downtown area. St. Pete initiated the magnet schools program in FL and had the first IB high school in the state. I found the local public officials in St. Pete to be more open minded and courteous than elsewhere in Florida and even more so than other parts of Pinellas county ( if that is the same stadium on the southside.)
The crowd appeared to be mostly white in the video, which was my experience during the few games I attended to get away from work. I knew a lot of people in St.Pete. My working class all white customers were definitely not democrats. However, one thing they detested while in their leisure time, was people raising political topics which in a social setting would almost invariably result in boos and STFU up type jeering. Back then minority communities didn't mingle. Asians, African Americans, and whites socialized in their own communities. But their children mingled socially and still do, almost 20 years later as far as I can tell.
I actually went to the Rays opening game in 1998. Haven't been in St. Pete in quite some time. Fwiw. Old timers anecdote. At one time, I was going to write a book (a novel) based upon my experiences in St. Pete, but got distracted by life.

(16,166 posts)it is basically blue but we have the trumpanzees that just have to drive around in their penile projecting trucks with their dumbass flags on them.
We have a Democratic mayor and even the last puke mayor,Rick Baker, wasn't all that bad but that was before the plague.
Anyway, I count this area as blue, not red.

(43,173 posts)Jacksonville is typically considered the most conservative of Florida's major cities and hadn't gone for a Democrat since Carter. That changed in 2020.
Trump's support is coming mainly from the inland rural areas of the state.
