(16,993 posts)Researchers in China including at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have said the virus shares 96% of its genome with a bat virus collected by researchers in 2013 in Yunnan Province, China.
The virus at the lab is more distantly related to Covid 19 than we are to chimps.

(1,786 posts)So that number can't be right. It was the going thing well before the genome was finished for both Homo Sapiens and Pan Troglodytes.
The latest number I heard was 96% which would made the separation about 10 million years instead of the usual 5-6 that was given in years past.

(16,993 posts)If you have a source please share because Ive not been able to find anything that says 96%.

(1,786 posts)And it is the only case in nature where this has happened. (Supposedly from what I've read, but maybe not.)
So are we a genetically altered species? Is there any truth to the Story of Enki?
Here is a link to the 96 percent but you can find anywhere from 95 to 98.8 depending...

Edit: Even though this one says 96 it still shows the separation point at 6 million years ago.

(95,243 posts)Thank you for bringing this forward.
It leaves no doubt Rand Paul is an ignoramus, looking for something or someone to serve as a focus for hatred in order to divert attention from his Fuehrer's derelictions and failures, which will cost well over a million of our people their lives before the matter plays out to its end.

(9,822 posts)Almost all the comments I could see on NPRs posting of this exchange were about the video having been severely edited by NPR to save Fauci.
The FUD is strong in this country.

(18,187 posts)The article I linked to sets out the basic parameters of the issues involved. The excerpt I posted is from C-SPAN. It's continuous and unedited.
I'm just one person, but it doesn't look to me like Dr. Fauci needs to be "saved" by creative editing. That said, I'm not a fan of one-sided edits.
Here's a link to Memeorandum's aggregate of coverage of the confrontation. There's news coverage from a variety of outlets, as well as left-leaning, moderate, and right-wing perspective.
