The Cleveland Indians are changing their name to the Cleveland guardians . How cool is that?
I am Groot!!

As someone who played all the way through high school, it has to be one of my favorite movies.

(25,467 posts)There are moments in that film . My favorite is the Willie May Hayes: you run like Hayes but you hit like shit!

(30,613 posts)I wouldn't get half the jokes, and the subject bores me.

(12,368 posts)Perhaps it has a very positive meaning.
But to my ear it sounds like your parents were lost and now some strangers are in charge of you. Very cold.

(12,368 posts)Havent been to Cleveland in over 50 years so I missed the reference. I dont even remember seeing them back then when visiting relatives. I always liked the city even though many people were of a different opinion.

(111,051 posts)I don't think it was thought of as politically incorrect at the time. They must have thought highly of the First Americans? They must have respected them very much. Otherwise, why would they call themselves something that was so negative and derogatory? They wanted to be brave like "Indians"?

Much like the Fighting Irish. Though, the leprechaun just looks like he's in the middle of a tavern brawl. However, as someone who is 100% Irish . . . eh, seems about right.

(2,220 posts)that Hubster thinks they chose Guardians because it only changes one syllable from Indians. I think its stupid to name a baseball team after statues.

I think they should stick with Washington Football Team. It's brilliant and denigrates no one. They are from Washington, they play Football, and they are a Team. Done! fire the marketing dept.

(4,175 posts)Now that's a great mistyped that made me really lol!
I agree the WFT name sounds good, but they should change it to The Washington Football Club, sounds more authoritative.

(278 posts)My vote is for the Washington Pigskins
To me, its a great option:
1) Pigskin is a nickname for a football
2) The fans could still yell "Go Skins!"
3) Their best known players were their offensive line, nicknamed "The Hogs"
4) If they can work with Warner Brothers, you put Porky Pig in a football uniform, and you got your new mascot
5) You could have a Political tie-in by having the home end zone called "the Pork Barrel"

(12,497 posts)in my 1972 Ford Ranchero. Ford guys would want me to pop the hood just to look at the big block V-8 CLEVELAND engine. I was told it's a BIG deal in Ford country. It even has it's own Wiki page:

Maybe the "Cleveland Engines" would have been more home-towny?
