About 100 U.S. Olympic athletes are unvaccinated against the coronavirus, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committees medical director said, according to The Associated Press.
Medical Director Jonathan Finnoff said that 567 of 613 athletes competing for the United States in the Olympics had completed questionnaires, which indicated that roughly 83 percent of the athletes are vaccinated against COVID-19.
Two U.S. athletes, beach volleyball player Taylor Crabb and alternate gymnast Kara Eaker, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Olympics so far.
Earlier this month, U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Andrew announced that he was not vaccinated.
I am not fully vaccinated, Im not vaccinated, Andrew, 22, said. My reason behind it is, for one, it was kind of a last moment, I didnt want to put anything in my body that I didnt know how I would potentially react to. As an athlete on the elite level, everything you do is very calculated and understood. For me, in the training cycle, especially leading up to trials, I didnt want to risk any days out. There were periods where you take a vaccine, you have to deal with some days off.

Being vaccinated to help prevent others from dying and disease is a responsibility of living in society. Some legitimately cannot be vaccinated (small children and those with severe medical conditions) and they need to depend on a vaccinated public for protection.

(10,421 posts)Vaccines have been available since at least March. You would think that the USOC would have scored some valuable Pfizers and Modernas for potential Olympians earlier than the Olympic trials. Or, as a potential Olympian, your coaches would advise you on the best way to deal with the side effects without disrupting your training schedule. So, the "it's a last moment thing" is total bullpuckey. They put it off.
