a Republican freelancer who probably isn't much interested in objectivity:

Gary Abernathy, a contributing columnist for The Post, is a freelance writer based in southwestern Ohio. After spending 13 years as an editor at three Ohio newspapers from 1983 to 1996, Abernathy worked in Republican Party politics in Ohio and West Virginia, as well as for an Ohio congressman and two U.S. senators. He returned to journalism in 2011, serving until July 2018 as publisher and editor of the (Hillsboro, Ohio) Times-Gazette, one of the few newspapers to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2016. Abernathy has won numerous industry awards for column writing, editing and reporting. His blog on local, state and national issues can be found at garyabernathymedia.com.

Gary Abernathy, who was and maybe still is a Trump supporter.

In fact, Abernathy is already getting delightfully pummeled in the Comments section. I think WaPo publishes his crap just for the fun of the comments. Here are just the most recent ones:

I have to agree with the general sentiment that many have already expressed. The call to listen to Trump believers with compassion and empathy is galling. People willing to subvert democracy, overtly extol white supremacy, and denounce and threaten any with opposing views are unlikely to respond with newfound openness to those they routinely identify as deranged and despicable traitors. Having been subjected to this kind of bitter, vitriolic threat and abuse, I believe that I can say with some confidence that the hope for a respectful and thoughtful "meeting of minds" that the author suggests is sadly unwarranted. I truly wish that were not the case, but it is.

The fact is the American public deserves to hear it like it is. A lie is a lie. Trump brought us to a place in journalistic history where we've never been before. He's lies and he lies a lot, and his supporters know he lies. They accept it. Reporter simply responded in kind. Stop being a snowflake. Trump is a liar and it needs to be reported that way. 2+2 = 4. He didn't "win" the election by "a landslide". There are no "alternative facts" or "whataboutisms" that change that fact.

conservative: averse to change or innovation and holding traditional values.
Similar to: Unable or unwilling to learn new stuff: which is another way of saying stupid. You can not reason with stupid by definition. See definitions. What you can do is encourage them to do stupid things that get themselves killed, like not getting vaccinated.

Einstein is claimed to have said that stupidity is infinite. We are a world of finite resources. Do the math. By measures of health we are the most stupid of the first world countries. Almost all "chronic diseases" of the elderly are nothing more than symptoms of lifetime of being stupid, as in very poor choices in the food that stupid people eat, and failure to properly use their bodies, ie hard frequent exercise. Type 2 diabetes, HBP, most forms of cardiovascular disease are just a few examples.

I talk to trump supporter:
You need to learn numbers, trump supporter. There's only 10, including 0, so it isn't very hard. You can count them on your fingers to remember, but it will take at least two days to count to 600,000.
But they say "Those are Arab numbers. We don't want to learn them."

You are just a Trump apologist. Anyone who believes the Big Lie is a fool and a sucker. A fool because the election results and methods have been recounted, contested, and litigated thoroughly, without a successful challenge. A sucker because they continue to believe a man who will say anything to further his agenda and has lied so often that if he ever told the truth the majority of the populous would be in shock.
I have 3 questions for any Republicans I know before discussing current or political issues:
1. Did Biden fairly win the election?
2. Was the 1/6/2021 protest at the Capitol an insurrection which posed a threat to our democracy?
3. Have you been vaccinated against COVID-19?

A no answer to any of the questions is a conversational non-starter.

We tried to explain to trump supporter:
There is this thing called virus
There is this thing called vaccine

You take the vaccine to beat the virus
but they say get the virus to beat the vaccine
They need to learn their numbers.

"We need to take the concerns of the neo-nazis seriously! Don't talk down to them. You know, they have a point on some issues"

No. We absolutely do not need to take the concerns of these people seriously and they should absolutely be shunned, ridiculed, and dismissed.

Once you cross the line, there's no going back. They showed us exactly who they were on January 6th.

I have tried talking to them. There is no talking to them. They deserve every insult thrown their way for their dangerous stupidity that threatens everyone in the US.

You don't jump down into the pigsty and roll around in the muck with the livestock, gobbling up the excrement alongside them
You slaughter and eat them via GOP economic policy—why do you think Romney looks so well fed?

What a bizarre opinion piece. Abernathy glosses over the reality that a majority of Republicans, especially in the Congress, have become part of a treasonous Trump death cult. I am done trying to “understand” the feelings of those who continue to support the worst human being to ever occupy the White House.

I have tried this strategy, but it’s hard. I was a Trump supporter until the fall of 2017 when he started firing the most competent members of his cabinet, while increasing spending while cutting taxes. Thus proving to me that fiscal responsibility was not a priority.

I’ve tried to reason and discuss issues with friends who are still avid Trump supporters. They don’t want to hear it. Most love their guy above all else. No amount of discussion will result in them believing anything that conflicts with what Trump tells them to believe. Truly sad.

You're kidding, right? How do you talk to rabid nothinkniks?

"Oh please don't call a lie a lie! That hurts the feelings of people who gleefully wear shirts that read 'Fuck Your Feelings.' You need to listen to their grievances, which don't just boil down to being scared of losing their unearned status in society or even having it questioned, so stop saying that."

And he was roundly criticized in the comment section for it as well.

I subscribe to the WaPo and it is my preferred US newspaper of note, however their "conservative" (i.e. RWNJ) columnists are some of the worst in any major paper. Henry Olsen, Marc Thiessen, Hugh Hewitt, Kathleen Parker, Megan McArdle and of course, Mr. Abernathy.

They range from the offensively conservative to the completely off-the-rails, flagrant Trump ass-kissing toadies who don't even try to present a balanced, rational argument.

I honestly don't know what some of them are still doing on the WaPo payroll, other than to stir up controversy. But its still a bit overboard.

Parker has occasional flashes of sanity. McArdle is more of a libertarian than a Trump-sucker, though she's usually full of crap, too. The comments sections following these op-eds are always a hoot.

guy needs to take a walk outside. Look around. See life. Connect with some reality, and then go talk to a Trump voter, but base the discussion only on facts. See how it goes.
