about that child tax credit

Last edited Fri Jul 23, 2021, 10:28 PM - Edit history (1)

my kid & her husband got a letter today telling them they did not qualify

they filed jointly, they have a baby, income puts them in the $300 monthly credit group

the letter essentially just said you don't qualify and (fuck off) there was no number to call anyone, contact anyone, etc.

she was crying and angry

she said the only person she can think of to call is her rep. lauren underwood

(she didn't have time to read the letter to me; i had to run a sick furbaby to the vets)

anyone else get turned down for this? or know what's up?

ON EDIT: she told me they used turbo tax that said rather than clicking on child credit or dependent it said they should click on something like other dependents (something like that--i never used it so i don't know & she couldn't remember specifically what it said but i guess they figured out that was what the problem is. so they won't be getting monthly installment payments.)

Underwood's office. I feel sorry for them.

We've not been eligible for any of the payments, but I'd rather pay taxes to help people doing their best than building a wall or paying for gold trips. I hope there is some recourse.

3. If the government figured wrong she can still get the credit at tax time

I know that is not the same as right now but at least they can get it down the road

As I understand it the rules are full credit up to 75 grand each then scales down until 200 grand a piece at which point you get nothing

The only thing I can think of for it being with held is owing back child support or owing back taxes

Please let us know what you find out

Good luck

it sounds like they checked the wrong thing on turbo tax; it sounded like she said turbo tax told them to check something other than child dependent

she also said they'll get the credit at the end of the year.

4. Ask to see the actual letter to figure out the next steps.

Then go to this link:

Advance Child Tax Credit Payments in 2021

https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/advance-child-tax-credit-payments-in-2021

Your daughter may simply be ineligible for to get payments in advance, rather than ineligible for the tax credit itself.

Here's information about the letters that were sent out by the IRS:
https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-sending-letters-to-more-than-36-million-families-who-may-qualify-for-monthly-child-tax-credits-payments-start-july-15

There's lots of good information here as well:

Good luck!

7. They need to get someone who has read and understands the law.

That’s not necessarily a lawyer, so no great expense.

Look for an article in Kiplinger or similar magazine that keeps up with that kind of stuff for us regular people. Just search “new child tax credit.” Try to at have a basic understanding.

Does your edit mean they realize they don’t qualify because of income, or that they don’t qualify because they made an error filing taxes? If the latter, they can amend their return, if talking to someone at IRS does not help.

Good luck to them. That credit is a big deal for young folks.

Depending on their income, they will recieve the whole tax credit when they file at the end of the year.

13. The credit was enhanced by $1600-$1000 a year depending on age

Younger children get the larger of amounts.

The money being given monthly is about half that amount given at the end of the year as a tax credit per child.

If I was not recieving the monthly credit now, I would just be sure it was given when I filled my taxes in January. The IRS is backed up with returns, I wouldn't amend if I really didn't need to right now, because who knows when you'll get the money anyway.

I don't think people understand this will end at the year end, unless the Democratic Congress is able to make it permanent...we can count on Republican'ts to do nothing as usual.

of their last filing. I wouldn't give up on it if you really think they should qualify.

At the very least, they should get all of it when they file this year's return.

Best of luck to them.
